Table Tennis League hit by withdrawals

the Bermuda Table Tennis League. But Old Colony Club and Bermuda Public Service Association have returned with formidable squads for the 1995-96 season which kicks off this evening with five matches.

A total of 11 teams will compete in the league, with Social Club confirming by tomorrow whether they will be able to field a second team which would increase the number of teams in the league to 12. Last year the league contained 13 teams.

The core of the OCC team will be Nick Frost, Dave Waltham and Mike Lindo, formerly of BAA, while BPSA have Rawle Frederick and Phillip Hackett, the former Bermuda College players and Myron Piper and Monique Ternier who were with Southampton Princess. They also have Brian DeSilva.

The league's top 10 players will compete in the round robin tournament on Saturday at Elliott School gym starting at 11 a.m. The list includes Derron Trott, Nick Frost, Dexter Smith, Hasan Durham, Dave Waltham, Rawle Frederick, Philip Hackett, Kacy King, Barry Rahman, Monique Ternier. Alternates are Marlo DeShields and Larry Marshall.

Prize money includes $150 for the winner, $75 for second place, $50 for third and $25 for fourth.

Ternier's father, Frank, will serve as the BTTA coach when a team travels to Detroit, Michigan for a tournament from November 24-26.

Ternier will arrive from Montreal on October 29 to train the players. He will also be available to coach in schools and with clubs and organisations free of charge.

Those interested should call Frederick at 236-9000, ext. 101 during the day or Mansfield Smith at 297-0518 after 6 p.m. Ternier will travel with the BTTA team to Detroit as coach but will not play.

The BTTA are hoping to field their number one team, consisting of four of the top players in the league.

Tonight's matches: Wolves I v Christian Rovers (Elliott School gym); Wolves II v Old Colony Club (Elliott School gym); BPSA v Social Club (BPSA); HPWC v The Centre (Ham. Parish); Prison Officers v Eastern Stars (Prison Officers Club).

All matches start at 7.30 p.m.
