Tall order for wobbling Wanderers

The Commercial League A Division side, runners-up to Robin Hood in the league last season, have lost their opening three games of the season and have been wracked by injuries.

Wanderers tomorrow.

The Commercial League A Division side, runners-up to Robin Hood in the league last season, have lost their opening three games of the season and have been wracked by injuries.

Now to make matters worse they face in-form PHC of the Premier League in one of the feature matches of the day at Somerset (2.30 p.m.) PHC are currently second in the standings, just a couple of points adrift of leaders, North Village. Their last game was a 3-3 draw against Wolves last Friday night.

Few would expect Wanderers to achieve much against opponents who have long been heralded powerhouses in the competition, but too often minnows have been able to lift their performance on the day to score upsets.

While Wanderers are capable pulling off a surprise if things run their way for any measured period in the game, doing so at a time when they are truly ailing seems highly unlikely.

Team official, Jim Gallacher, said he wasn't expecting a cup victory but hinted that nobody anticipated them folding and simply handing victory over to the Zebras.

"I don't think we are expecting to win, that's for sure,'' he said. "We trained for the game this week and obviously talked about it then.

"You never know, but quite frankly I don't think there's much chance of an upset.

"We are really struggling and it will be a miracle if there is an upset. But obviously we are not going out there to get beat, we have to try our best, but I can't see anything happening.'' Gallacher said while the team had enough bodies to cover for absentees, injuries to key players had hit them hard.

"We have got numbers but the injuries have been to people who would normally start the game,'' he said.

"One of them is the goalkeeper, John Doran. He actually is the captain of the team and has not played yet. He was injured just before the season started.

"There are quite a few others, but you battle on don't you.'' The other Commercial Division teams involved tomorrow have less demanding games as they are matched up against sides in their own league. Bermuda Pest Control take on St. George's All-Stars at Wellington Oval at 12.30 p.m. and Tuff Dogs meet Vasco Mariners at the same venue at 2.30.

Three other Premier Division teams see action in the opening round with Devonshire Colts expected to have the toughest time of the lot against First Division side Ireland Rangers at Malabar (2.30 p.m.).

Mike Corday, coach of Rangers, said he realised his team were up against a Premier Division side but said they were prepared to do battle.

"Devonshire Colts are a good team, they are especially a good FA Cup team but we certainly welcome the challenge. We would like to think we will score an upset, but we don't know what is going to happen,'' said the coach.

Rangers have one victory from two outings this season with their last game seeing them fall to Social Club by a convincing 4-1 margin.

Corday said it was disappointing to see them lose that game but reckoned that with the squad close to full strength following the return of players from vacation and injury they were looking for better things against Colts. "I didn't like the way we played against Social Club at all, but we would like to put that performance behind us.'' Colts, fourth in the league, are coming off a 5-2 loss to leaders North Village but should still be composed enough to squeeze by Rangers.

The remaining Premier Division teams in action, North Village and Dandy Town, should also dispose of their First Division opponents without much trouble.

Both matches are at St. John's Field where Village play Boulevard who have lost two of their three games while Town host Paget.
