Teachers looking to bounce back

Teachers will be aiming to get back to winning ways in the annual Denton Hurdle Memorial game at National Sports Club tomorrow (3.30 p.m.).

The club lost the Cunningham Cup but aim to put that behind them in what could be one of the last ever games of rugby at the venue.

"We're coming off a disappointing Sevens campaign which saw us lose the Cunningham Cup by one point to Police,'' said skipper Henry Adderley.

"But, in some ways, it was good thing to happen to us. We were starting to become a little complacent despite everyone's efforts to not do that.

"It's hard to stay on edge when you are winning all your games and this will help fire us back up.

"The club's thinking we've been beaten, we can be beaten and it is disappointing to lose so let's try to make sure it does not happen again. We know we cannot take any game lightly.'' That is not going to be a problem as far as the Denton game is concerned.

"This is the biggest game of our year,'' said Adderley. "Denton was a great sportsman who was admired by all who met him and it is a great privilege for Teachers players to play in his honour.'' Pete Shillingford, who has put together the President's side, said he believed the match had a the making of an exciting contest.

"The last few years Teachers have won. It is a big game for them and they get really worked up for it,'' he said. "Throwing a side together is always a bit difficult, it takes 25 minutes for people to get an understanding but hopefully it will be a good, entertaining and open game.'' Shillingford will be sitting this one out.

"I probably won't be playing. I've got a bit of a dodgy knee at the moment -- just like the rest of me. So I will have to give this one a miss this weekend,'' he said.

He said he hoped a big crowd would turn up and support the event.

"Obviously with it being the Memorial game we want to see as many people down there as possible,'' he said. "It's all up in the air at the moment as regards the pitch at Nationals so this potentially could be the last Memorial game there. It would be nice to see a good crowd down there and an entertaining game.'' Prior to the Hurdle Memorial game there will be a seconds match between Teachers and The Rest at 2 p.m.
