Teachers' seconds make men in blue pay
Police failed to capitalise on a wind-assisted territorial advantage in the first half, losing 12-0 to Teachers during Second XV action on Saturday at the National Sports Club.
Using the most suitable tactic on a wet, windy day, the up-and-under Police were foiled by good defence from full-back Andre Simons. Teachers, winning the majority of the scrum ball, scored a try in the first half after 30 minutes through winger Jeffrey Redmond from following a scrum, which was won against the put-in.
Both teams were bogged down by the wet conditions and the score remained 7-0 for the next hour. Just before the final whistle, flanker Dan Bucher drove over the line from a close maul to put the outcome beyond doubt at 12-0.
Renegades 34, Mariners 3 A sodden pitch and a wet ball gave rise to handling errors resulting in dozens of scrums where the Renegades' pack completely dominated by virtue of an initial shove against the Mariners' front row lacking a recognised hooker.
For Mariners, eventual 34-3 losers to Renegades, flanker Peter Voss was tireless in an otherwise beaten pack and outside half John Lalone took on the opposition at every opportunity.
Scrum-half Steve Everest, familiar with the British-like conditions, had a fine game for Renegades.
The Renegades' backs relished the steady supply of ball and the likes of full-back Barry Whitehead and centre Mike Gorrie were basically unstoppable; Whitehead himself getting a try and setting up two others through wing Martin Jinks and Gorrie.
Everest got the final try with Jinks getting a total of nine points with the boot.
This weekend's rugby action at National Sports Club will see Teachers v Mariners (2 p.m.) and Renegades v Police (3.30 p.m.) on Saturday while Sunday's games will feature Renegades v Mariners (2 p.m.) and Teachers v Police (3.30 p.m.).
