Teachers stomp on Police

yesterday when they soundly thrashed Police 37-0, while Mariners kept pace with a 27-13 defeat of Renegades.

Like true sportsmen, Teachers accommodated Police's request that the game start at 1.30 p.m. instead of the usual 2 p.m. so that Police could field a full side.

But that is as far as the favours went.

From the beginning Teachers took control of the game, though their passing and tackling left much to be desired in the opening minutes.

Andre Simons and Butch Robinson combined well on the right side and it was Simons who put Teachers ahead 3-0 after 12 minutes with a penalty kick.

Moments later Teachers were almost on the scoreboard again. Captain Alvin Harvey fed a smart pass to Simons on the left. Simons then switched the play to the right wing where Robinson was waiting. However, Robinson's pass -- earmarked for team-mate Andrew Correia -- was smartly intercepted by Police forward Danny Cozens.

Teachers flanker Terry Walsh celebrated his return to the First XV, after suffering an injury during the Caribbean Championships in Trinidad last December. He scored two tries in the first half, but was rushed to hospital midway through the second half after he collided with team-mate Ron Hooks.

Both men received nasty cuts to their foreheads but are expected to return for the Denton Hurdle Memorial game next week.

Scrum half Michael Montgomery scored Teachers' third try after he stripped the ball from Police scrum half Tim Fox.

Police were almost on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute, but kicker Dave Bird saw his effort strike the post and bounce harmlessly to the sideline.

After the interval Robinson scored two tries and Scott Correia added another to end the rout.

, Mariners 27, Renegades 13 In the second game, Mariners went ahead 3-0 after only three minutes through a Declan O'Laughton penalty kick. Five minutes later Dennis Faries received a good pass from Mariners scrum half Danny Soares and scored his first try.

O'Laughton added two more points with a successful conversion to make the score 10-0.

Renegades were given little opportunity to settle into their attack and they were dealt a further blow when number eight Wayne Fisher rumbled over the line for the score and O'Laughton's conversion made it 17-0.

Pat Jones gave 'Gades their only first half points with two penalties.

O'Laughton added three more points with another penalty kick after referee Kim White awarded Mariners a penalty after Nick Hinton of Renegades attempted to play the ball while on the ground.

Mariners' captain Dave Conway added salt to Renegades wounds when he kicked the ball over the 'Gades back line caught it and scored. Gavin Corcoran converted it. 'Gades were now down 27-6.

Renegades, scored the final try of the game through centre Ross Finnegan which Jones converted.
