Teen Aaron outdrives the men
outdrove even the men as he walked away with the junior boys 13-15 division title in the inaugural Long Drive Championship at Bermuda Golf Academy on Sunday.
James slammed his biggest drive a whopping 304 yards -- more than 100 yards further than Camiko Smith, his nearest rival in his age group.
But his monster hit was also longer than that of Men's Open winner Bob Martyn, who managed an even 300 yards.
The event was the brainchild of local pro Eardley Jones and sponsored by Golf Rules Dictionary (which Jones distributes) who donated the prizes.
"Everbody had fun, it was a good turnout,'' said Jones, who plans to make it an annual charitable event. "I'm sure it will get bigger.'' Many of the top local players were missing from the field of 24. But still some $500 was raised and donated to junior golf.
Second to Martyn in the men's open was Jeff Brewer with a drive of 292 yards while Andrew Bissell placed third with 290 yards. That turned out to be the most competitive division as just 10 yards separated the top three finishers.
Jones, himself, won the senior men's title (50-60) with a drive of 240 yards while Gill Riihiluoma took the senior women's prize with her drive of 201 yards.
Leo Custodio (257) and Colin Martin (247) were the top finishers in the super senior (60 and over) division while Ricoh James won the boys nine and under.
He had a winning drive of 170 yards, four ahead of Mark Phillips. Nick Jones was third on 149 yards.
Emily Linn won the nine and under girls after a drive of 105 yards, 20 yards better than Catherine Jones.
