Teens take centre stage in bid for Fed Cup promotion

Bermuda have named an all-teenage team for their foray into the World Cup of women's tennis, the Federation Cup.

The foursome named by Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association yesterday -- Danielle Paynter, Tara Lambert, Zarah DeSilva and Danielle Downey -- is unchanged from the team which played in Costa Rica last year and will again be captained by Kelly Holland.

They will travel to El Salvador next month, where Bermuda will be one of 16 nations in Americas Group II vying for promotion to Group I.

Last year, when the Bermuda team beat Antigua & Barbuda, but lost to Jamaica and Peru, DeSilva, Downey and Lambert were all making their Fed Cup debuts.

And the experience they gleaned from that will help them do well this time, said BLTA president David Lambert.

"They all did well last year, there were a lot of close matches, but now they are a year older and definitely a lot wiser,'' said Lambert.

"And although they are all so young, what is pleasing to us is that they are all going as champions -- they have all won tournaments on the local circuit over the last year -- so we know they all know how to win.'' Paynter, 19, won the singles event at Port Royal last year, while Lambert, 18, won the Coral Beach Invitational.

Best friends DeSilva and Downey, both 15, both won titles at last week's Heineken Open at the Tennis Stadium. DeSilva won the A singles and Downey the B singles.

The 16 countries competing on the red clay courts at the Maya Country Club in La Libertad in the week starting May 8 will be divided into four pools of four.

The top nation in each pool after round robin play will go forward to play off for positions one to four, with the top two winning promotion.

Bermuda will not get to know what oppostion they will face until they reach the Central American country. Holland will be briefed on the draw in a captain's meeting on Monday, May 8.

The team will then play three ties in three days, starting on Tuesday, May 9, and wherever they finish in the pool, they will play at least three further matches to determine their final placing out of the 16.

David Lambert tipped Peru, who beat Bermuda 3-0 last year, and Puerto Rico as favourites to go up and said Haiti were also likely to be strong.

He added that the youth of the team was a major positive for the sport.

"A few years ago, our Fed Cup team was very mature in terms of age,'' said Lambert. "But now the youngsters have stepped up into the team and they have really earned their places.

"What is a bit scary is that in three or four years' time, they will be our veterans. And there are other youngsters coming through the ranks now who will be pushing for places.'' The youngsters have been training on green clay, which is the closest thing in Bermuda to the red clay they will encounter in El Salvador.

"We don't know exactly how the surface will be prepared,'' said Lambert. "If it is rolled very tight, it can play a bit like a hard court. But that is the advantage of being the home team.

"Whatever the surface is like, I'm confident the girls can cope and that we should get some good results.'' Americas Group II: Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago.
