The Bermuda Offshore Cruising Association race held on Sunday featured the usual tight competition with 12 boats on the starting line.
The drama started before the race, however, when the crew of Buddy Rego's Tsunami went to the assistance of the driver of a jeep which had gone off Harbour Road and plunged about six feet into the water. The crew was quickly on the scene in a small powerboat and were able to transport the injured driver to a nearby dock where he was picked up by ambulance.
Once underway the course took the yachts from Hamilton Harbour out along North Shore to a buoy off Fort St. Catherine and back, a total of 25 miles. With persistent rain for most of the race and gusty southeast winds in the region of 20 knots, both crew and equipment were put to the test.
Gear failure seemed to be the common feature of the day. Crew Cut was forced to withdraw before the start due to a broken main halyard, joined later by Alexis with a steering cable failure.
Circe had her share of problems during the race when her job halyard snapped but she was able to continue.
Finally, for the technically minded, Delphinus proved that a spinnaker towed astern is a very effective sea anchor capable of bringing a boat to a rapid halt shortly after deployment astern.
The third race in the BOCA winter series will be held on Sunday, March 13.
