Thrilling finish for junior race series
National Stadium.
As in past years, the last event in the series will be held in conjunction with a Bermuda Pacers meet on the running track. The two younger age groups will run 1500 metres while the 13-15s will compete over 3,000 metres.
Danlia Martin, Kor-von Tucker, Shellicia McKenzie and Flora Duffy already have three wins each and accordingly have locked away the first prizes in their respective age groups.
But the remaining two are still up for grabs, with three or four young athletes in striking distance of first place and a championship.
Jarazhino Bassett and Ryan Hopkins currently lead the 8-10 boys with 125 points each, but a win on Saturday could vault Justin Collis over both of them and into first place in the series overall.
The final series placings are based on each athlete's best three finishes in the five races comprising the series and Collis has won two of the other four races.
Taijuan Talbot is in front in the boys' 13-15 division on 125 points.
Importantly, he has two wins already which means his fate lies in his own hands. If he wins on Saturday then the championship is his, if not Chayce and Coyatito Smith, both of whom are currently on 100 points, could overtake Talbot and snatch the championship.
Prizes will be awarded to the first three boys and girls in each age group on Saturday. Registration begins at the track at 8.00 a.m. with the meet itself getting underway at 9 a.m.
Current standings, see Scoreboard TRIATHLETES BACK IN ACTION TRI Triathletes back in action More than 150 local athletes are expected to take part in Bermuda's first major triathlon of the year on Saturday -- the Tri Gatorade.
The entrants will be competing in both individual and team, junior and adult events at Clearwater Beach in St David's.
Saturday's races mark the seventh year the event has been staged and for the first time this year it will feature a duathlon for those who are not so keen to get into the water just yet.
The junior triathlon for children between the ages of seven and 14 will begin at 10.00 a.m., with the adult race and the duathlon at 12 noon.
Both the junior and adult events will allow competitors to form teams to compete.
Applications are available from Sportseller, Wheels and the Winner's Edge. In order to avoid late entries, applications should be returned by today.
