Cardinals made Canaries fight all the way for their title as Cardinals beat Longtails 2-0 on Saturday to put the pressure on Canaries.

Cardinals did just enough to win against a very short-handed Longtails side.

Although Cardinals lacked their usual punch up front they eventually scrambled a goal into the net late in the first half, courtesy of Tracey McPhee.

It was McPhee again who secured the points for Cardinals in the second half.

On Sunday, Canaries found Orioles in a determined mood at the beginning of the game. Canaries were fortunate to go ahead in the eighth minute when Sarah Northcott's shot was deflected into the net by an Orioles defender.

After that Orioles defended steadily against considerable pressure to remain just one-down at the interval. But two minutes into the second half, after a broken up penalty corner, Samantha Adams slipped the ball to Rhonda Rawlins who took the ball round the diving 'keeper to take Canaries up 2-0.

Only two minutes later Sandra MacDougall dribbled into the circle and scored with a push to the 'keeper's right. Canaries were now well in control and could have gone further ahead when they were awarded a penalty stroke as Adams was deliberately floored in the circle. Rawlins' shot, however, hit the post.

But it was Rawlins who completed the scoring in the 27th minute as her shot from a long corner squeezed in at the near post. Rawlins has had an outstanding season, scoring 19 goals to lead Canaries to the championship. The second high scorer in the A League is Joanne Wilson of Longtails with 12.

In B League action, already crowned champions Canaries increased their lead with a 2-0 win over Orioles, thanks to two goals from Georgi Barboza.

The Pegasus Tournament will be played on Saturday and will include Brentwood School, a visiting team from British Columbia.

BOWLING BOW The Bermuda Women's Bowling Association's 32nd annual championships were held on Sunday with a total of 20 teams participating.

The team `Just Because', made up of Darnell Raynor, Charletta Samuels, Bobbie Ingham, Kathy Christopher and June Pitt defended their Division I title by bowling a 2,896 handicap total with `Mega Bucks' close on their heels, nine points behind on 2,887.

In Division II `Never Too Late' were saved by the bell when a team-mate who didn't show up was replaced by a substitute. Undaunted, they went on to win the title thanks to the efforts of Myrna Outerbridge, Joanne Fubler, Maryann Wilson, Doreen Smith and Brenda Williams, as they combined for a 3,039 total, 100 pins ahead of second-placed `Last Minutes' on 2,939.

The doubles and singles portion of the tournamnent will be held this coming Sunday with three shifts, 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Entry forms are now available at the Warwick Lanes.

GOLF GLF The breezy conditions at Belmont on Saturday did not hinder the Group IV players as no less than four players shot rounds of 76 or better, with Craig Brown leading the way with a one-over-par 71.

Brown was one under with only three holes to play and his fine effort was followed by Quinton Sherlock with a 74, David James with a 75 and Robert Spurling on 76.

The Group III players also fared well with Matthew Hocking leading the way with a score of 80. He was followed by Jon Legere on 82 and BJ Payne on 85.

Neil Fenton topped the Group II section for 13 holes with a score of 61 to win by four shots over Rajesh Pachai on 65 and Chris Smith who finished third with his 66.
