Top trio keep pace in title race
Commercial Cricket League title.
Leaders West Indian Association remained five points clear of rivals North Village, who have a game in hand, and Forties after thrashing Devonshire Stars by nine wickets.
Village scraped home by eight runs against defending champions PHC, who now trail WIA by 25 points, while Forties had to fight hard to beat nine-man Safeguard Security by five wickets. It was Safeguard's first match for a month.
St Michael gained an emphatic 102-run win over Sandys Sport Club who are still looking for their first victory.
League secretary Dave Carruthers has confirmed that teams have been awarded five points apiece from the round of games washed out on June 28.
WIA quick bowlers Ken Savoury and Stan Francis undermined the Devonshire Stars innings at Shelly Bay, taking six for 20 and three for 17 respectively as Stars were dismissed for 94.
John McConnie spurred WIA to victory in 22 overs by hitting one six and eight fours in his 63 in an opening stand of 77.
Both sides collapsed at PHC Stadium where Village maintained their unbeaten two-season run over PHC.
Mike Levon (25) and David Scraders (23) put on 47 for the first wicket for Village and El James later chipped in with 33 but Village were swept aside in 26.1 overs for 118. Charles Symons, who had one game for Somerset at the start of the season, with five for 38 and Cal Waldron, who took four for 44, did the damage.
PHC moved to within 23 runs of victory with six wickets in hand but then crashed to 110 all out as Ernest Paynter snapped up four for 10 and James three for 32. Braxton Stowe and William Minors each made 35 for PHC. In a reversal of misfortune -- Forties played two short in their drawn first encounter when they rattled up 271 for two -- Safeguard Security fielded only nine men at Garrison Field on Sunday ... and one of those had turned up in the hope of joining Forties! The handicap didn't affect Safeguard's batting and Craig Cannonier and skipper Herman James put on 106 for the first wicket before they were parted in the 34th over.
James made 37 from 112 balls. Cannonier went on to reach 69, smashing five sixes and three fours in his 103-ball innings. Harold Minors' unbeaten 27 included a massive straight six as Safeguard hit out to good effect to reach 158 for three.
Cannonier again proved a thorn in Forties' side, taking three for 50 from 13 overs.
James Thomas, who came in at 13 for one, carried Forties to victory with an unbeaten 62 -- his third half century in four innings -- which contained five fours and lifted his average for the season to 84.
Allan Lee, dropped first ball, made 21 but Forties still required 45 from the final 10 overs. Clevie Smith hurried things along with a knock of 25 and Forties eventually eased home with 23 balls to spare.
Sandys' Paul Ross (five for 52) and Troy Berkeley (three for 33) helped dismiss St Michael for 159 at Warwick Secondary but the West Enders were then bundled out for 57 in only 16 overs.
Michael Campbell (45), Ian Coke (38) and David Gibbs (29 not out) were the chief contributors to the St Michael total and then Gibbs struck again, taking three for 13. Rohan Ramotar took three for two, claiming all three wickets in his second over.
