Town, Village keeping stategies a secret

holiday soccer campaign, North Village and Dandy Town still appear to be keen to give fans something to rave about tonight when they clash in the first leg of the Dudley Eve final at Devonshire Rec. at 8 p.m.

The second leg will take place at Wellington Oval on Sunday starting at 2.30 p.m.

The camps of both teams were yesterday holding their cards close to their chests, giving away little in regards to their approach to the two matches which will be the third and fourth meetings between the teams this season.

Each have so far won once, Town as recently as Boxing Day when they edged out Village on penalty kicks to reach the final.

"Dandy Town are a good outfit and are playing with some style right now,'' said North Village's coach Andrew Bascome.

"Having a match (on Tuesday) should effect us, but we haven't really played up to standard yet. The legs may be a bit weary, but the players still have to rise and take it. We have to use both games, maybe contain them in the first one and then use the open space to stretch them a bit more in St. George's.'' As was seen in the Boulevard-Village match -- and even the Village-Town encounter four days ago -- the teams rely heavily on attacking opportunities down the left side.

And that could be decisive in the final where Village's Damon Wade and Town's Walter Musson are capable of undoing any defence. In their last outing Kris Martin presented Village with numerous problems down the left flank and in Carlos Smith they have the joint top goalscorer, with seven goals.

Anthony Manders, acting coach of Dandy Town, said that he was more concerned about his team's mental approach, pointing out that if they can focus on the task at hand everything should go fine.

"The talent is there, it's just this mental thing that concerns me. The team has been playing okay, sooner or later the goals will come in bunches because we are getting our chances here lately,'' said Manders.

"Our defence is playing particularly well, we haven't conceded a single goal in the Dudley Eve to date. Physically we are okay, we've basically used the same starters in both matches and it's possible we may continue to do so, who knows,'' he added.

The two teams were scoreless in regulation time on Boxing Day with North Village losing out on penalty kicks 5-3 after Damon Wade missed, but North Village perhaps motivated themselves by looking back at their league match-up on December 5 when they were 1-0 winners at Bernard Park.

Village have made use of college students Wade and Maceo Dill, both forwards, goal-keeper Dwayne Adams and defenders Wendell Bassett and Irving Romaine and the group is expected to be here for the finals before jetting back off to school hoping to have played a part in the club's first Dudley Eve success in six seasons.

Wade is already among the leading scorers in the division with four goals in four games and much will depend on him.

Village might appear to be the slight favourites but Town, by virtue of playing one game fewer on their way to the final, will at least have had more time to rest and regroup.

Sunday's final at Wellington will be preceded by a women's exhibition match at 12.30 p.m. between Rude Girls and Dandy Stars.

The women's league begins on January 7 with a double-header at Devonshire Rec.

when Terminators take on BAA in the 7 p.m. opener and Dandy Stars meet Rude Girls in the 9 p.m. match.

Devonshire Cougars will hold a training session this evening at 5.30 for their senior players.

REMATCH -- North Village, led by captain Elliott Jennings (left) will be gunning for revenge when they take on Dandy Town and Pernell Douglas in the two-leg final, the first match being held tonight at Devonshire Rec. at 8 p.m.
