Town's turn to celebrate?

Devonshire Colts shocked Vasco in the Friendship Trophy final.

Now the Dandy Town coach will be plotting Colts' downfall when the two sides meet in the season-ending FA Cup final tomorrow at the same venue (4.00 p.m.).

And while Trott insisted there wouldn't be any special tactics employed, he also promised Colts would not be taken lightly.

"We just have to concentrate on what we do best,'' said Trott last night.

"In the context of the game if it requires them to use a little bit ingenuity to get out of situations then they should be able to do that.'' Winning the FA Cup was one of Dandy Town's goals at the start of the season, as well as reaching the Martonmere final.

"The bottom line is we're pleased to be there and we're going to give it our best shot,'' Trott assured.

"We're not going to underestimate Colts... far from it. Even though we're in the FA final, we are disappointed we didn't win the league.'' Trott saw for himself that Colts are capable of pulling off an upset in the final. And he is confident the two teams will produce a good match.

"I don't think that seeing them last week is going to have any direct bearing on the game this weekend,'' said the coach.

"I thought Vasco were worthy opponents but at the end of the day I thought the result was just. On the day Colts were the better team.'' The same two sides met in the first final of the season, with Town beating Colts in the Martonmere Cup at Wellington Oval. It was the 18th consecutive time that Colts had been to a final and lost.

But last weekend the Devonshire club managed to end that disappointing run by winning the Friendship for the first time since 1981 (not 1974 as previously stated) and now they go into their end of season final with a better than fair chance of winning the FA Cup for the first time in 25 years.

No doubt the team are still on a high after last weekend's impressive 2-0 win over Vasco. But complacency could be their undoing if they take Town lightly, captain Shannon Burgess warned.

"Our confidence is high but we've got to keep it in perspective,'' said Burgess yesterday.

"We can't be too laid back and play off last weekend's performance. We've definitely got to tune in on Sunday's match to be able to do the job for 90 minutes. We still have a job to do.'' Town's own record in this competition has also not been too impressive lately, having lost their last three appearances over a five-year period from the early to mid-1990s.

Three players who could have a say in changing that are top scorers Darron (Duke) Simons, McLee Smith and Reggie Tucker who between them have netted 33 goals this season. Simons is the Island's top marksman with 16 and a cup final is the type of occasion he likes.

"I think Dandy Town will be well prepared, probably better prepared than Vasco were,'' said Burgess. "They have some good finishers and we'll have to find a way to contain them.'' Three Colts players, Troy Hall, Derek Wright and Jerry Laws, were all in the St. George's team which beat Devonshire Colts in the 1996 Friendship final, while veteran Harrison Trott has been around long enough to remember Colts' last cup success in the early 1980s.

Last weekend the 38-year-old was on the bench with his teenage son, Geron, but whether father and son get some time on the pitch together will depend on how the match progresses. In fact, Geron may have to make room if Jahmah Samuels and Marvin Belboda return to the squad.

"Some of the guys were not even born the last time we won a final,'' said Burgess who captained the team to the league title two years ago.

"This is a big final and you want to end the season on a good note, not just because it's a cup final but it's the last game before the summer and you don't want bad memories through the summer.

"Winning the league was really special because a lot of players go a lifetime without winning a league championship. The next best thing is the FA Cup.'' A total of three finals are scheduled for tomorrow with Rude Girls looking to retain the Women's FA Cup against PHC Teasers in the 12.00 match while St.

George's Colts and Somerset will battle in the 2.00 Crystal Palace Cup final.
