Track meet targets youth

Championships are held today and tomorrow at the National Sports Centre.

Somewhere in the region of 200 junior and senior athletes are expected to take part in the two-day event which starts at 4.00 today with the opening ceremony and continues tomorrow at 4.00.

Most of the members of the recent Carifta team, which included 12-year-old shot sensation Brittney Marshall who won a silver medal against girls four or five years her senior, are expected to compete.

A number of college students are also expected to take part in the various events, with Damien Simmons, a pupil at St. Augustine's College in North Carolina, already signed up for the 800 metres where he will provided some good competition for Carifta team member Richard Walcott.

The Nationals will also serve as a qualifier for the Junior CAC Games in Puerto Rico as well as preparation for the East Coast Invitational next month which is now combined with the Russell E. Blunt meet. That event is scheduled for North Carolina from July 21-24.
