Trojans seek Town favour
fate in their own hands while Somerset Trojans are relying on a big favour from Dandy Town as four teams battle for the last two Martonmere Cup semi-final places tonight at BAA Field.
Two teams have already played their two round robin matches and will be watching tonight's matches with varied interests -- Village to see who their opponents in the semi-finals will be and Somerset to see if the result in Group A will go their way and allow them to be a part of the next round.
For the Trojans, with just a point from their two matches, now need Dandy Town to beat defending champions Boulevard by at least a three-goal margin in order to advance on goal difference. Any other result would mean that Boulevard will go through from that group with Town having already booked their passage.
In Group B, Village are already certain of advancing, though a Vasco win by more than two goals over Devonshire Colts will put them on top of the group.
By the same token, a Colts victory over Vasco will give them the second spot in the group though Vasco, needing only to draw, have an advantage.
The night will begin with Devonshire Colts meeting Vasco in the 7 p.m. opener, the second meeting between the teams this season. Colts won that first encounter but things might be different now that Vasco have gotten off the mark with their first win of the season.
Colts were edged 4-3 by PHC on Saturday and though there was some encouragement in their front line which contained Ellington Weldon for the first time this season, there must be some concern about a defence missing Derek Wright and now Jahmah Samuels.
With players like Weldon, Craig Smith, James Pace and Marvin Lewis there is plenty of punch in the Colts front line to trouble Vasco, while the backline can expect to have an equally busy time trying to contain a Vasco attack led by Irving Burgess, Derek Thomas and Voorhees Astwood.
"Our biggest concern is in defence,'' admitted captain Ellington Weldon.
"They (Vasco) are pretty confident coming off their first win but we're not near full strength yet.
"From what I've seen, with players missing, we're definitely going to get better. Our chances are still good (of qualifying), we just have to beat them.'' Weldon found the net in his first outing of the season, the first of what he hopes will be a 20-goal season. "I set my goals in pre-season which is 20 again and I was two short last year,'' he said.
Tonight's second match will be between Boulevard and Town who, like Colts and Vasco, have also already met this season. The match won't change much as far as Town are concerned for they are already through to the next round, though a Boulevard win would deny them the top spot in the group.
Town's win over St. George's came at a price with Troy Durham getting ejected and midfielder Gladwin Johnston being carried off in the second half after a collision.
Boulevard had the weekend off after their match with North Village was postponed because of the high winds and that extra rest could work in their favour.
LOOKING TO ADVANCE -- Leonard Hypolite, left, of Devonshire Colts and Wayne Campbell of Dandy Town will see action tonight in important matches.
