Two down, one to go as Island starlets win again

Bermuda 4 N.Antilles 0 `Bring on Jamaica' declared Bermuda under-17s coach Kenny Thompson after seeing his talented youngsters set up a `do or die' clash with the Reggae Boyz with a 4-0 victory over the Netherlands Antilles last night.

A penalty from Curt Stovell in first-half injury time set the home side on their way and then further efforts from Damon Swan, Domico Coddington and another from Stovell sealed the victory.

The margin of the win means that Bermuda now have a one-goal advantage over their Caribbean rivals and a draw tomorrow would be enough to send them through to the next round.

Thompson acknowledged that his side made hard work of their victory at times, but said they must be given credit for sticking to their task.

"I think we did enough to win the game. We made life a little bit difficult but on the other hand the Netherlands Antilles also made life very difficult for us,'' he said.

"They were very physical and packed the centre of the field and always had a lot of players on top of the ball.

"We said beforehand that it was going to be important that we be able get penetration on the wing, once that happens we can get quality crosses or if we can go straight to the goal then we can get a shot.'' Thompson said the victory had been the most important thing, with the number of goals a close second.

"Initially we said the main thing was to get three points especially after Jamaica defeated Barbados. But at the same time we said we wanted to get three points and, if we could, put ourselves in the driver's seat on Friday,'' he said.

"That meant we had to score a lot of goals. At 3-0 we had six goals and then 4-0, now we are in the driving seat and Jamaica must beat us.'' The goals ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous. Firstly Stovell, who went on to miss another spot-kick, stroked his penalty past 'keeper Remi De Wolfe with consummate ease and then Coddington's run and perfect cross allowed Swan to side-foot home from six yards.

The third was a combination of Coddington's vision and bad goalkeeping.

Spotting De Wolfe ever so slightly off his line, the winger hit a 30-yard free-kick high into the night. The 'keeper must have seen it all the way, but somehow it evaded his clutches and dropped into the net.

And his night didn't get any better when he hit a poor clearance straight to Stovell who fired it straight back from 20 yards.

Despite the magnitude of the game -- arguably the biggest of the young players' lives -- Thompson said he would not be preparing the team any differently.

"We will prepare the same way we have all this time. When we started we wanted on Friday, to be in a position to qualify and we are,'' he said.

"In terms of special preparation we have seen Jamaica play twice and we know the positional play of their team. They have some very good players but I am absolutely sure we can beat Jamaica.

"As always it is not going to be easy as they are a very, very good team and it's going to take a special effort on Friday in order to defeat them.''
