Umpires continue Bridge boycott
discussion -- not for their prowess on the cricket pitch, but for their apparent inability to manage affairs off the field of play.
Again the issue is umpiring, as Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association continue to boycott matches involving the White Hill club due to their failure to pay outstanding umpiring fees.
Bridge have yet to come forward with an instalment plan agreeable to both parties and thus will likely have to use unofficial umpires for tomorrow's match.
Standing as victims on this occasion are Western Stars, who entertain Bridge at St. John's Field. And skipper Arnold Manders was not particularly pleased with having to suffer for his opponents' shortcomings.
"All Bridge have to do is start paying on their bill. I'm sure the BCUA will accept a modest instalment repayment plan. I don't see the problem, really,'' said Manders, sounding perturbed by the continiong fiasco.
"We will have to find at least one person to umpire and hope to have it dealt with by Sunday.
"I'd like to see what their problem is. They need to put down a policy to pay this off. The umpires will be lenient and probably appoint people once the club makes an attempt to pay a small amount on the bill.'' Bridge remained silent on the matter as president Kenny Simmons deferred to club spokesman Randy Bean, who could not be reached yesterday.
Still, no matter who is designated the job of officiating, Stars should come away with maximum points against a Bridge team deficient in all departments.
Meanwhile, tomorrow features a full slate of matches, with two in particular piquing interest.
St. George's will be looking to get on track at home against a struggling, but capable Cleveland outfit that narrowly escaped an embarrassing defeat a week ago against Stars.
At Southampton Oval, Rangers face Devonshire in a match-up of fallen powers that could go either way.
Other fixtures see Somerset host Warwick, Flatts against St. David's at Devonshire Rec., defending Premier Division champs Bailey's Bay entertain whipping boys Social Club and Willow Cuts travel to face Nationals.
All matches start at noon.
