Unbeaten Vasco march on

Vasco became the second team to qualify for the semi-finals of the Martonmere Cup last night as they brushed aside a spirited challenge from Boulevard during an action packed encounter at Devonshire Rec.

Similar to the two side's first meeting a week ago, Vasco's three-pronged attack of Corey Hill, Sammy Swan and Irving Burgess did the damage, each netting once in the second half.

Donnie Charles scored for the Blazers, but one goal was never going to be enough to hold off the unbeaten Vasco outfit.

However, early on Boulevard were the more aggressive team, controlling much of the running with Charles, Neil Robinson and Michael Holdipp linking well in the midfield, while forward Rodney Bascome gave Vasco full-back Derek Stapley a torrid time on the left side.

Robinson should have put his team a goal up as early as the third minute when a quick counter attack resulted in the midfielder finding himself in possession unmarked and just 10 yards from goal. But a feeble left foot shot was all Robinson could muster.

Vasco came close to scoring in the 32nd minute, as Boulevard defender Vernon Eve was forced into a desperate clearance off the line from a Franklyn Simmons shot that was earmarked for the back of the net.

The second half, however, saw Boulevard not nearly so fortunate, with Swan connecting on a fierce drive from 10 yards in the 49th minute following a mis-kick by team-mate Burgess.

Barely three minutes passed before Boulevard found themselves further in arrears. This time Hill was inexplicably allowed to roam free down the left flank before cutting in and beating Andre Hendrickson with an angled blast.

Boulevard responded with a furious, sustained assault, forcing Vasco into several desperate clearances, before Charles finally broke through, sending a 25 yard thunderbolt into the top left corner.

It was then left to Burgess to put the result beyond doubt with an injury time tally, the speedy forward connecting at the far post from a Swan cross.
