Underdogs face huge task

of group matches in the Martonmere Cup against Dandy Town and North Village respectively -- win and win big to reach the semi-finals.

Having been humbled during opening encounters both proud clubs find themselves in what used to be uncustomary positions, that as distinct underdogs against opposition they once ate as but a mere snack.

However, the days of wanton domination by the Zebras and Trojans have long since passed, and while the former do at least warrant respect based on their position as reigning league champions, no such privilege will -- or should -- be afforded the latter.

Somerset, who it must noted were given short notice on their inclusion in the competition because of Vasco's departure, were totally outplayed by Devonshire Colts to the tune of a 5-2 massacre on Tuesday night, which marked the return of Norbert Simons as head coach.

And they now play a side, in the form of North Village, that did a similar thing to Colts and have had more than a week to prepare. Add to that their need to win by some three goals and the situation indeed appears bleak.

Meanwhile, PHC are in a much more `do-able' position as they need but to defeat Dandy Town by two goals in order to advance.

Town showed some cracks during their opener against Wolves, but like Village, have had time to rest and make changes to the plan, with coach Andrew Bascome sure to have added a few special surprises.

Matches start at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. with PHC and Town opening matters, while Somerset and Village bring down the curtain.
