Valley, Somerset move on: F.A. CUP
Spurred by a hat trick from striker Kevin Isaac, Valley surged into the second round of the FA Cup last night with a win over Commercial League rival Island Rangers.
Isaac struck once in the first half and then returned to hammer home two more goals in the second while being assisted by a single strike from Sean Smith.
In an entertaining affair, despite the low level of skill shown by both sides, Rangers were made to pay for startling ineptitude in the finishing department.
For while Rangers dominated every facet of the game, they simply could not find the back of the net with the regularity required.
Valley, on the other hand, took full advantage of minimal opportunities.
Isaac first hit paydirt in the 17th minute and began the nightmare for Rangers goalkeeper Sheridan Bremar, whose failed clearance led to the goal. Isaac popped up again the 56th minute and again it was a miscue by Bremar that created the chance.
Bremar fumbled a weak effort by Mike Walker and Isaac pounced, forcing the ball over the goal line from in close.
Rangers pulled one back in the 66th minute as Blaine Outerbridge was in position to slot home a failed clearance by Bobby Lambe. However a minute later, Smith restored the two-goal advantage, as Bremar dropped a harmless cross inside the six-yard area and Smith volleyed it home.
Isaac completed his hat trick in the 72nd minute as Bremar inexplicably advanced 40 yards from his goal, leaving the striker the simple task of shooting into an open net.
Rangers closed to within a goal behind late strikes from Wendell Anderson (79th) and Troy Berkeley (89th).
Valley will meet Social Club in the second round on November 10 at PHC Stadium.
Somerset 6 Bda. Pest Control 0 Leading by a suprisingly low margin of 1-0 at the half, the once-mighty Trojans exploded for five goals in the second to ease into the second round of the FA Cup.
Jelani Butterfield started the goal rush with a 44th-minute strike, slamming home a right wing cross from Kevin Bailey.
However any visions BPC had of staying close were soon erased by a rampaging home side.
Butterfield turned supplier in the 50th minute, beating his marker deep on the right and sending in a low cross that an onrushing Shawn Riley crashed home from 17 yards.
Thunderous long-range drives from Musceo Hunt (52nd minute), Anthony Burchall (79th) and Duane DeRoza (82) together with a close-range score from Bailey (59th) completed the rout.
It was the first time Somerset, relegated to the Second Division at the end of last season, has been involved in the FA Cup this early in the competition.
The Trojans' next match is November 10 against Mariners at White Hill Field.
