Village edge through as Wolves let 3-1 lead slip

(after extra time) North Village surged into the semi-finals of the Friendship Trophy, after coming out on top of this drama-filled tie against Wolves at Somerset Cricket Club.

A slow beginning masked a frenzied finish, with five goals coming in the second half, and two more as the matched moved to the extra period.

At 3-1 down with five minutes left in regulation, and having lost the inspirational presence of defensive stalwart Kentoine Jennings to what appeared a serious knee injury, Village appeared dead in the water.

Indeed, Wolves held matters in their hands, it was at this exact point that the words of coach Dennis Brown proved prophetic, unfortunately to the detriment of his own squad.

"If you snooze you lose,'' Brown was quoted as saying in a recent newspaper article leading up to last night's affair. And just as Wolves rested on the laurels of a two-goal advantage, Village pounced, ultimately knocking them into slothful slumber and out of the competition.

Substitute Kevin Jennings keyed the comeback, first drawing a penalty in the 85th minute as he surged inside the area, which Michael Hansey expertly converted, and four minutes later it was Jennings supplying a left-side cross inside the six-yard box that picked out the head of Jamaul Boyles for the equaliser.

Both sides entered extra-time in weary states, but Wolves were the more worse for wear, with Diallo Sharrieff hobbling badly on a bum left knee, and the quota of substitutes already used.

A catastrophic blunder by Corbin Durrant literally handed the winner to the Red Devils, as the goal-keeper appeared to have covered a harmless cross into the middle by Tarik Jennings, but such was his nonchalance in collecting that he inexplicably allowed the ball to fall from his grasp over the goal-line.

Wolves were clearly a beaten bunch, and it was left to Kevin Jennings to heap a final helping of misery on the Hermitage Road crew, with a solo act of brilliance that saw him race half the pitch, leaving defenders in his wake, and exclaiming the move with a rifle shot past a forlorn Durrant.

Earlier Village had taken a first-half lead through a header by Hansey, coming off a left-wing corner taken by Tarik Jennings.

But this advantage did not last as Wolves stormed back after the break with Nakia Smith equalizing a minute into the second stanza, scrambling the ball past a maze of defenders.

Jared Peniston made it 2-1 as a period of pressure from Wolves further unlocked the Village defence.

Smith notched what appeared added insurance in the 80th minute, with a well placed header, but this was but a prelude to what was to come.

Paget 2 Prospect 1 Paget survived a scare from Prospect in this Shield encounter, being forced to come from behind to dismiss the men in blue in a match that saw them score all three goals.

Prospect took the lead as a result of an Ornette Fough own goal, but he was redeemed as Dennis Russell and Jermayn Pond scored more conventional tallies in favour of the Ord Road Club.

Kentoine Jennings: injured.
