Village keep Dudley Eve hopes alive
North Village made a quantum leap in the First Division standings when they defeated a befuddled Hotels outfit 2-0 at PHC Stadium last night.
Goals on either side of the interval by Paul Simmons and Kevin Jennings enabled the Red Devils to move from seventh to fourth and put them in good stead for a berth in the Dudley Eve Trophy to take place over the Christmas break.
A handful of spectators watched as Hotels were continually at odds to contain the waves of attacks as they were repeatedly exposed at the back by purposeful running by Village's front line.
Bermuda's World Cup goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams was also welcomed back to the fold, but would last only a half before succumbing to an allergic reaction he believed to be caused by the temperature change coming back from school in the United States.
Meanwhile, Village's first goal came seemingly out of nowhere as in the 19th minute Simmons received a pass from Elliott Jennings following a throw-in on the right deep in Hotels' half. The striker turned and unleashed a left-footed shot from 35 yards that caught goalkeeper Gladwin Edness flat-footed as the ball sailed into the back of the net.
Spurred on by this early strike Village pressed further forward and again it was Simmons getting off a shot that this time was easily saved.
Edness pulled off a fine reflex save of a Elliott Jennings drive from an acute angle in the 35th minute when the midfielder had sprung free of his marker on the left side.
Unable to mount much in the form of an attack, Hotels went into the break searching for answers. But first they would be posed another question as Village doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half.
This time Kevin Jennings was the beneficiary of a pinpoint cross into the penalty area by Simmons, which he managed to steer past an advancing Edness.
Confidence was now oozing on the part of Village as they freely marched forward with the Jennings boys controlling things in midfield while Simmons, Philip Clarke and Tito Smith had their way up front against a disjointed Hotels defence.
Clarke almost increased Village's lead 57 minutes into the match when he outpaced two defenders only to have an alert Edness block his effort away for a corner.
Smith then had his attempted chip parried away moments later and Kevin Jennings was similarly unfortunate to miss with a snap-shot from long range.
To Hotels' credit they continued to fight to the end. Eugene Simmons almost pulled one back as his low drive in the 83rd minute rolled inches wide of the right upright.
Nevertheless, it was Village who had more chances to pad their lead with only inaccurate finishing by Simmons and Smith standing in the way of a more convincing scoreline.

Four teams will be chasing one Dudley Eve Trophy spot tomorrow when the first half of the league programme is completed. Devonshire Colts, Somerset and PHC have already assured themselves of places in the Dudley Eve Trophy, with defending champions Boulevard amongst the four hoping to join them. Boulevard can thank Village for keeping them in the running for that last spot, though it was a case of Village helping their own cause also by handing Hotels their third straight defeat. Still, Boulevard look the least likely to qualify as they trail the three other contenders by one point and thus have to beat leaders Devonshire Colts at St. David's and hope the other three do not pick up maximum points.
Village's match is tough enough, at home at Bernard Park to champions PHC while Town entertain St. David's at St. John's field and Hotels meet St.
George's at Southampton Oval. The odds favour Town.
Bottom team Hamilton Parish take on Somerset in the other match at Wellington Oval.
Town, whose goal difference is better than that of both Hotels and Boulevard, should take maximum points from St. David's at home while Hotels should do likewise with St. George's at Southampton Oval.
Village's match with PHC and Boulevard's encounter with Devonshire Colts will be tough ones for the home teams, even more so because these two teams, like Somerset, have their sights on sole possession of first place.
The battle for the two promotion spots continues to take shape and tomorrow there are two key matches involving the top four teams.
Leaders Vasco take on third-placed Wolves at Devonshire Rec while second-placed Southampton Rangers and Social Club meet at PHC Stadium. The other matches see Somerset Eagles play Port Royal at White Hill while BAA take on Prospect at Southampton Oval and Paget meet Devonshire Cougars in the 3.00 match at the Den.
Bermuda's World Cup squad is requested to report to the Bermuda Football Association's offices on Monday at 5.30 p.m. when a post mortem on the World Cup will be held.
Administrator Joe L. Brown said that the players, in addition to discussing the recent campaign, will be asked for their views on the overall national team's programme and in which direction the BFA should go from here.
