Warren made to wait

November 15 can't come fast enough for Dwight (Payback) Warren! That is the date the former Boulevard midfielder will be cleared to make his debut for North Village, after being forced to miss his new club's first 10 or 11 games of the season because he transferred from Boulevard during the late transfer period.

So while most of the Premier and First Division players will kick off their new season this weekend, Warren and other late transfers will have to wait another six weeks before they can kick a ball in competition.

"I would like to be involved now, but unfortunately that's the policy,'' said Warren yesterday, just before heading out to Devonshire Rec. to watch his new club play their second match of the season in the Martonmere Cup. Village clinched a spot in the semi-finals with an impressive 4-2 win over Vasco.

"For anybody it's important to get into some match fitness,'' said Warren, realising he will be behind his teammates in terms of fitness when his season starts.

Warren has been training regularly with his new club and can't wait to get started. But the decision to leave his only club was not taken lightly and he says Boulevard are still in his heart.

"I was kind of in between two minds whether to remain with Boulevard or go to North Village,'' said the playmaker who will likely play on the left side of Village's midfield.

"I have been with Boulevard all my life, but one of the reasons I went to Village is in remembrance of my late brother, Dennis Warren, who played for Village. Also just for a change, but Boulevard will always be in my heart.'' From winning numerous titles with Boulevard, including two league, three Martonmere and four FA Cup titles in the 1990s, Warren now wants to enjoy similiar success with the Red Devils.

"I feel we have a great chance of winning trophies, that's one of our goals,'' said Warren.

It's been 11 years since Village won the first major trophy of the season, the Martonmere Cup, but they are now two wins away from winning it. With Dandy Town, they are threatening to be one of the teams to watch this season.

Warren also doesn't expect Boulevard, who flirted with relegation briefly last season, to have any problem surviving in the top flight, even with three teams going down.

"Once they believe in themselves, play as a team and listen to instructions.

I'm sure they are not thinking about survival,'' stressed the former captain.

Warren was rumoured during the summer to be headed to newly promoted PHC. He says he did give them some consideration before deciding on Village.

"I considered them but I looked at Village and their style suits the way I play,'' he said.

No doubt Village will be an even better team when the exciting Warren finally gets to pull on their red and white jersey.

Three other top players who will have to wait until November for their first games are Vasco's Sinclair Gibbons, former Vasco winger Irving Burgess and Boulevard's Otis Minors.

Gibbons returned to them Vasco during the late transfer period after initially rejoining St. George's, while Burgess has decided to leave relegated Hamilton Parish for a club presently unknown. Minors has decided to return to St.

David's.

The BFA have announced two First Division venue changes for Sunday. The Ireland Rangers-St. George's match which was scheduled for Malabar Field has now been switched to Wellington Oval and will be a home match for St.

George's. Hamilton Parish have had their match with Somerset Eagles switched again from Garrison Field to Shelly Bay.
