Way fights back in three-set thriller
with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph to retain the men's A singles title at the Heineken Bermuda Open on Saturday.
Frigerio -- the only person to beat Way in a tournament final last year -- proved to be a stubborn foe once again. Leading 4-0 in the third set his game collapsed to open the door for the wily Way to win the championship.
On display before a large crowd at the Tennis Stadium was Frigerio's awesome serve, but Way remained patient despite being on the verge of an upset loss.
Frigerio was undone by the high humidity -- something that almost cost Gill Butterfield the women's A singles crown.
But top seed Butterfield defeated second seed Debbie Darrell 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, after Darrell had clawed her way back from trailing 4-1 in the third set.
Mike Levon won the men's B singles title with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over number one seed Eugene Simmons.
Winner of the women's B singles championship was Julie Bett, with a 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-3 triumph over Ellen Kelly.
Way was victorious later in the day with partner Mike Curry when they stomped on top seeds Ricky Mallory and Steve Bean 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Wendy Frost and Sheila Gomez teamed up to win the women's doubles 6-1, 7-5 over Laverne Stowe and Allison Towlson.
Butterfield and Curry combined to beat young phenom Danielle Paynter and Steve Bean 6-0, 7-5 to capture the mixed doubles title.
In seniors action, Earl Leader grabbed the men's singles title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over David Furbert; Oliver Bain and Furbert won the men's doubles crown 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 over Ray Knight and Bernd Miller while Debbie Harper and Erica Hendricks defeated Denise Kyme and Wendy Salvia 7-6, 6-2 to win the women's doubles championship.
The next major tournament on the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association calendar will be the Pomander Gate Open from June 14 to 25.
