WIA knocked out of top spot
Gladwin Ingham snatched the wicket of Roy Trottman in the last over of the game to give bottom team Forties a surprise one-run victory over West Indies Association in a Commercial Cricket League match at Southampton Oval on Sunday.
With just six balls remaining, Trottman offered a catch to Forties' skipper Gordon Campbell to end WIA's run at the top of the table. It was their first league defeat of the season.
WIA went into the weekend with a slim lead over Sandys, but with the latter beating Pembroke United at Shelly Bay by 42 runs they leapfrogged into first place. WIA are now second and Forties moved into third place with Pembroke United last.
Sandys have to be thankful to Forties for pulling victory out of the bag in a match which WIA seemed to have well within their grasp.
In their chase of a target of 154, WIA didn't appear in trouble and looked to be on their way to another comfortable win after Chris Ward and John Reece put on 73 for the first wicket. Ward struck 46 and Reece 26.
Even after Ward holed out to mid-on and Reece followed one run later, WIA were still favourites until their innings suddenly fell apart.
The score moved on to 142 for four before the further loss of five wickets plunged WIA into deep trouble.
Entering the final over with their last two batsmen at the crease, WIA needed just one run to draw and two to win.
But the pressure was too much for Trottman and the catch he gave to Campbell off Ingham ended WIA's challenge.
Ingham was the top bowler for Forties with three wickets for 28 runs off 9.1 overs while Jim Walters snatched three for 38 off 12 overs, including two maidens.
Earlier WIA had won the toss and sent Forties in to bat. Openers Grant Tomkins (37) and Tim Bridges (13) got them off to a decent start with an opening stand of 24 before Bridges was well caught by John Reece at mid-wicket.
Tidy bowling by George Rock and Donville Yarde managed to keep Forties at bay, limiting them to 41 runs in the first hour.
But with further contributions from Gerald and Rohan Simons, who scored 19 apiece, skipper Campbell (16) and Ingham (21), Forties were able to reach a respectable 153 for seven off 42 overs.
Yarde proved to be the best of the WIA bowlers with four wickets for 34 runs off 12 overs, including three maidens. Rock had one for 28 off nine overs with three maidens.
At Shelly Bay, Sandys defeated Pembroke United by 42 runs with Terry Ward hitting 64 and David DeSilva 29. Scores: Sandys 134, Pembroke United 92.
Terry Corday Jr. was the bowling hero for the west-enders with five wickets for 25 runs while Ray DeSilva had two for 25 and Blake West two for 18.
However, the best all-round performances was turned in by Pembroke United's David Gibbs who snatched six for 35 and then led his team in batting with 31 runs.
