Wolves hit five as Rangers cave in
A three-goal blitz by Wolves during the final 17 minutes well and truly killed off Rangers and gave the visitors a flattering margin of victory in the Premier Division clash at Southampton Oval.
The scoreline gives the false impression that this was a one-sided affair when it was anything but for Wolves, who had to sweat it out before a tiring home side allowed them to take the initiative.
Midfielder Tori Davis scored twice for Wolves, one a penalty, while other goals came from Shaki Crockwell, Nakia Smith and Jared Peniston. Rohaan Simons got the lone goal for Rangers.
Until the final stages when Southampton folded, they were competitive against a Wolves team that showed similar inconsistency as their opponents did during the first 70 minutes of play. Few would have figured Wolves would be able to go on the rampage in the end and their fans sang triumphantly at the end: "Who let the Wolves out?!'' But it was far from a spectacular performance by Wolves and coach Dennis Brown has to be worried about his players being able to lift their level against more prominent teams.
Wolves took a 1-0 lead in just the fourth minute through a spectacular header by Crockwell who managed to get his head to a cross from Peniston to steer the ball home from 13 yards. But Rangers fought back bravely and a fierce left-footed drive by Travis Wilkinson saw goalkeeper Corby Durrant dive full length to slap the ball away only to see Simons grab the equaliser for Rangers.
Five minutes later Simons should have put the home side ahead after Wilkinson put him through but this time the speedy forward shot tamely wide.
Wolves though refused to lie down and were themselves thwarted when Crockwell latched onto a through ball from Peniston only for Jason Williams in the Rangers goal to block his point-blank shot.
After 40 minutes Wolves regrouped and came back into the attacking picture with Crockwell finding Chae Simmons with a long ball down the right flank, but the eager Simmons could only drive his shot from 14 yards high over the bar to the dismay of his bench.
But Wolves got the deserved go-ahead goal a minute from time when another long cross, this time from Davis, found Nakia Smith unmarked in the middle to steer home a fine header from close range.
Rohaan Simons was a little unlucky after 46 minutes when he slipped through the middle and watched his close-range shot strike the legs of the fallen Durrant.
The home side lost their grip however and Wolves attacked relentlessly and it was no surprise when they went ahead after 73 minutes.
The busy striker Crockwell raced through on a breakaway and was fouled by goalkeeper Williams and Davis was able to put home the spot kick to give Wolves a 3-1 lead.
Shawn Simmons powered a 20-yarder just over after 75 as Rangers attempted to prove they weren't out of it, but Wolves responded with young substitute Adam Outerbridge, who added spark up front, heading just wide from 12 yards.
Then the bottom really fell out for Rangers with the last two goals by Wolves coming from breakaways with the defence stranded.
After 88 minutes Davis slipped through and made it 4-1 and a minute later Peniston did the same, finishing it off for a 5-1 triumph.
