Youngsters off to camp

talent with coach Steven Burgess and seven youngsters set to head off to the United States today for a week-long camp.

This will be the third annual trip overseas for the young Harriers and a step up in quality as they will be amongst 200 who will be put through their paces at the University of Indiana. The Harriers visited the University of Georgia in 1990 and Springfield College, Massachusetts, last year.

The athletes are Collin Anderson, 14, Mandisa Robinson, 16, Quennell Robinson, 16, Keivon Richardson, 16, Stephen Hall, 16, Giovanna Watson, 15, and Kevin Smith, 15. "This will be a learning experience for the athletes,'' said Burgess yesterday. "They will learn the disciplines of track and field and received individual coaching.

"If last year's camp is anything to go by, there will be three to four sessions a day, which will entail actual running, pool running and video analysis.'' There will be an all-comers track meet at the end of the camp. The Harriers reaped the rewards of previous camps when Sharif Taylor brought home a silver medal at under-17 800 metres at the CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas in April.

Burgess stated that Taylor would have been included in the trip but he has a prior engagement -- the Junior CAC Track and Field Championships in Tegucigalpa, Honduras! In order to afford the trip, the youngsters raised funds by completing the Marathon Derby on May 25 with Quennell Robinson placing a commendable 50th.

Major sponsors were Hamilton Harriers, Centre Re and Finance Minister David Saul.

The Bermuda Track and Field Association is covering the airfare of coach Burgess.
