Youth baseball
play-offs commenced and the three teams emerged as combatants in the championship round-robin.
The fourth-place Mariners stunned the first-place Royals 14-4, then lost to the second-place Phillies 6-1. That result has set up a showdown in the finals between the Royals and Phillies. If the Phillies are victorious they will be crowned league champions and if the Royals win the finalists will have identical 1-1 records. That means the tie will be broken by run rate, so the Royals will have to win by at least 10 runs to take the title.
In the consolation series, the third-place Reds defeated the Pirates 3-1 and then the Mets beat the Pirates 6-1.
The consolation showdown will feature the Reds against the Mets.
