Youth side suffer 9-goal loss

Tournament in Trinidad were dashed yesterday when they were hammered 9-1 by Costa Rica.

Bermuda lost their opening match 5-0 to the United States on Sunday and yesterday's thrashing leaves them pointless in the group and without any hope of finishing high enough in the four-team group to advance to the second round.

There are 12 teams competing in the tournament with the winners in each of the three groups advancing along with the best second placed team.

No other information on the Bermuda game was available last night.

Tomorrow Bermuda play their final group match against the Dominican Republic, who the Costa Ricans narrowly defeated 2-1 on the weekend.

Shawn Goater notched his second goal is as many games for new club Bristol City who were involved in another high scoring match last night, this time in the first leg of the Coca Cola Cup.

City, who lost 3-2 on Saturday against Gillingham, drew 3-3 away to Torquay as Goater scored the team's first goal in the 51st minute to pull them back to 2-1 after Torquay's hat-trick hero Baker had scored in the 44th and 46th minute. He completed his treble in the 56th minute but City hit back in the 70th and 82nd minutes to force a draw.

The other Bermudian in England, Kyle Lightbourne, scored his first goal of the season as Walsall won 1-0 at home to Watford, one of the teams relegated from the First Division last season.

Lightbourne found the net with a header from near the penalty spot in the 54th minute from a Kevin Wilson cross and Wilson later missed a penalty which could have given Walsall a more comfortable lead for the return leg in two weeks' time.

"In the first 20 minutes we were under a lot of pressure but started to come into the game after that,'' explained Lightbourne.

"That second goal would have given us a better chance. When we go to Watford it is going to be difficult for us.''
