Amateur Daniels making his mark
Amateur golfer Terence Daniels will be looking to make a name for himself competing in the US this summer.
The 21-year-old Smith's parish resident is currently enrolled at Grand Canyon University in Arizona and earlier this month he helped the Antelopes qualify for the National Championships for the fourth straight year.
Daniels completed the 54-hole National Championships qualifier (NCAA West Central Regional) with a three-day total of 214, which left him in a tie for seventh-place in a field of 108 golfers.
The former CedarBridge Academy student continues to show enormous promise and earlier this year he shot a sizzling five-under-par 67 at the GCU/Thunderbirds Invite held at Palm Valley Golf Club and had a team-low scoring average of 73.55 for the season.
Overall, Daniels says he's satisfied with the direction in which his game is heading and is confident he can make an impression competing on the US amateur scene over the summer months.
"School is already out and I plan to stay overseas for the summer to play in a few big tournaments to get some exposure at the national level. I am playing in a few US amateur qualifiers and hopefully I can get my name out there," he told The Royal Gazette.
"I feel that I have improved from last year. I set out to achieve a few goals this year and I think I have accomplished all of them and I am pretty happy about that.
"One goal was to have a scoring average below 74 and I achieved that. Another was to help the team make the National Championships again and we did.
"I also tried to break 80 in every round and be more consistent because last year I was inconsistent. But this year I was more consistent and was able to help my team out."
Daniels is generally pleased with his short game and ball striking but reckons there's room for improvement in terms of his putting.
"I play with a lot of good players and I can see the difference in how they play. They make more putts and score better than me," the plus two handicapper added. "My short game is pretty good and my ball striking has improved a lot. But improving my putting will help to take me to the next level."
The Bermuda Junior Golf Association product is a big fan of compatriot Michael Sims – who is currently making huge strides on the Nationwide Tour – and hopes to follow in his footsteps.
"Michael is really having a breakthrough season playing on the Nationwide Tour this year and to see him enjoying success makes me want to work even harder and represent Bermuda to the best of my ability," he added. "I have never played with him before, but I met him last summer."
The Antelopes finished 15th overall at this year's National Championships and with a few new faces set to bolster the ranks, Daniels is confident he and his team-mates can improve on that showing next year.
"This year we were lucky to make it (National Championships) because our team wasn't as strong as it was the year before," he said. "But next year we have a few good recruits coming in that will add depth to our team."
