Athletes did us proud, says Watson
Quicksilver sprinter Jeneko Place has been praised by Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Waton for his standout displays at the Carifta Games in Cayman Islands.
Place, who has now qualified for the World Youth Championships, won two silver medals in the under-17 boys 100 and 200 metres and posted personal best times in both events.
Bermuda finished fifth out of 26 nations that competed in the Caribbean and won an impressive ten medals – four more than they sooped at last year's Games in St.Lucia.
Shaquille Dill also won a silver medal in the 800m, while Juma Mouchette (1,500m), Jasmine Brunson (long jump), Taylor Ashley Bean (3,000m) Allison Outerbridge (triple jump), Henry Stevens-Carty (800m) Christian Wright (long jump) and Akeila Richardson (triple jump) all claimed bronze medals.
Watson said: "I'm very pleased with the team's performance. I'd caculated we should get about 10 medals and that's the amount we won.
"We just about medalled in all of the events we participated in and we placed fifth out of the 26 teams that competed in Carifta.
"Of course the performance of the meet for us was Jeneko Place winning two silver medals in the 100m and 200m and qualifying for the World Youth Championships. He was just off the Commonwealth qualifying standard.
"There were some other good performances with Christian Wright leaping into third place on his last jump in the long jump and having two athletes on the podium with Shaquille Dill placing second and Henry Stevens-Carty placing third in the 800m event.
"We had plenty of time on the medal podium this year.
"The athletes perfomed up to our expectations and we really made an impact at the Games this year.
"I'm very proud of all of the athletes and they truly did Bermuda proud."
