Augustus takes Bacardi Par 3
Daniel Augustus won his first tournament as a professional when he claimed the first annual Bacardi National Par 3 Championships at Southampton Princess on Sunday, holding off Tim Conley to take the tournament by two strokes.
On the par 54 course, Augustus shot a 52 on the first day and backed it up with a 59 on Sunday for a final score of plus three, two strokes ahead of Conley who shot a 56 and a 57 who ended on plus five.
"The win is important to me as it's my first as a professional and my second tournament as a pro," he said. "I saw this as a morale booster for when I travel overseas and the win makes it more prestigious and great for the confidence," said Augustus.
"I had been practicing well before the tournament so going in I was comfortable and after the first day of shooting two under I was pleased."
The win also bought Augustus his first prize money, $1,100, while Conley also claimed $550 for his weekend.
Quinton Sherlock jr, Eric West and Scott Roy rounded out the top five.
Augustus is now hopeful to attract more sponsors as he looks to take his game overseas.
"The course wasn't easy, but I felt confident of finishing the job and getting the win," he said.
"I didn't play the best golf on the last day, but I was able to pull through and get the victory. I double bogeyed 15 and said to myself that I had to get out of cruise control because of the laid back attitude I had entering the day.
"I'm trying to get overseas more, a few US tours such as the Tar Heel Tour and one in Canada, and see what happens from there.
"Hopefully I can get a few more sponsors that will allow me to be away for a little longer."
Susan Bond won the Professional Ladies championship, while Laura Robinson and youngster Tariquah Walikaraam were second and third respectively.
The men's and ladies Open Gross winners were Nick Mansell and Robinson, while Steven Hickmott and Laura Outerbridge claimed the men's and ladies Open Net titles.
