Barcelona prove to be human after all
Barcelona fans shouldn't be too worried despite the great Spanish club not having the best of weeks. Last weekend in the Spanish league they played to a scoreless draw against local city rivals Espanyol which allowed Real Madrid to close the gap at the top to one point. And then Barca lost to Inter Milan 3-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday after a long bus journey to Italy on account of the ban on flights.
That just showed me that Barca are human after all. But this weekend they host bottom club Xerez before they play the second leg of their semi-final against Inter at Camp Nou.
I think you will see a different Barcelona team on Wednesday playing in front of their own fans. I thought that Inter played well and shut them down which is what you have to do with a team like Barca. They kept Messi fairly quiet but next week I think you will see the Barca we have come to love. I also think that Barca were unlucky in that they didn't get what to me was a clear cut penalty against inter. If they had got that then it would have been 3-2 with two away goals.
Lyon are certainly not out of it even though they lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in Germany in the other first leg semi-final of the Champions League. And in the return leg on Tuesday the German giants are going to miss French winger Frank Ribery who was deservedly sent off in the first half for an ugly challenge. He really could have broken the guy's ankle ¿ I don't know what he thought he was doing. It was a definite red card.
However I was not too sure about the red ¿ after two yellows ¿ given to Lyon defender Toulalan. I didn't think what he did deserved the second yellow but there you have it.
With all the English clubs out of the Champions League I am now looking for Fulham and Liverpool to get to the Europa League final and face each other. That would be nice.
Liverpool lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in Spain in the semi-final first leg while Fulham drew 0-0 with Hamberg in Germany. Both had long journeys by road because of the flight ban in Europe but they will now be on home soil next week for the return leg.
I would especially love to see Fulham make it to the final. That would be great for manager Roy Hodgson who I have really admired. What he has done with the small club has been remarkable.
For a football fan, this season has been great ¿ it is still so tight in the Premier League, Spanish League and Italian League.
Only one point separates Chelsea from Manchester United, only one point separates Barcelona from Real Madrid and only one point separates Roma from second place Inter in Italy. You can't get too much closer than that!
What bugs me is Arsenal. If they had won against Spurs and Wigan in their last two games they would be joint top with Chelsea. Last weekend they were 2-0 up against Wigan and then let it all slip away losing 3-2. That is unforgivable ¿ especially for a team like Arsenal. Gunner fans must be pulling their hair out.
And Spurs really took it to Chelsea and although they won 2-1 the score could have easily been 4-1 such were the chances Spurs had.
Now Spurs and Manchester City, who lost to a last-minute goal from Manchester United's Paul Scholes last weekend, will battle it out for that fourth Champions League spot. Both clubs have tough games this weekend. Spurs will travel to Manchester United while City will travel to Arsenal ¿ really hard games.
It would be amazing if Spurs managed to win at Old Trafford. If they do that would mean they have knocked off Arsenal, Chelsea and United in succession. But Spurs have not beaten United at Old Trafford for many years.
It is not just the top of the table where it is tight. I will be paying close attention to West Ham when we host Wigan while the other relegation candidates ¿ Hull and Burnley ¿ are also at home with Hull hosting Sunderland and Burnley with a much tougher prospect hosting Liverpool.
