Bascome to help Hogges

Bermuda Hogges have brought in local coaching legend Andrew Bascome as a 'troubleshooter' as they look to turn their struggling season around.

The new Boulevard Blazers coach will cast his critical eye over the Hogges' training sessions for the rest of the campaign at the behest of his former protégé, and club president, Shaun Goater.

Bascome is widely accepted as a coach par excellence on the Island and Goater hopes to secure the ex-Bermuda international's services as an expert advisor on a permanent basis.

"Andrew is the best coach there is in Bermuda and is someone I respect immensely," said Goater. "It always amazes me why he hasn't ever been involved in the national team. Maybe the Hogges have been too inclusive by not looking for outside support before.

"I'd like Andrew to be a permanent part of the backroom team by the start of next season, but much will depend on how much time he can devote to us as he's involved with the Island Soccer League. We wouldn't want to impede on that."

The Hogges currently lie in eighth position in the league table, just four points above bottom club Pittsburgh Riverhounds who they face in a basement battle in the US this Saturday.

Goater has become increasingly concerned about the level of the Hogges' progress this term and believes Bascome's vast knowledge and experience will help the team develop a "more rounded" style of play.

"We've had some good performances but the results have not been as good as we would have liked," he said. "It could be that we as coaches have not delivered. It could be that the players aren't good enough to consistently perform at this level.

"Me and Kyle (Lightbourne) have been looking at the options to try and improve and it was decided to ask Andrew if he'd be willing to get involved. He will bring a different perspective and some fresh ideas to training."

The Hogges will be looking to tighten up security at their home games after a supporter became embroiled in an ugly exchange with Lightbourne after crudely barracking the coach to make a substitution during last Friday's draw with Real Maryland Monarchs.

Goater described the incident as "comedic" but stressed that supporters who used bad language and behaved aggressively would not be welcome at their games.

"The fan in question was in quite a state and I imagine he doesn't even remember much about the incident," said Goater. "I know he threw some French fries at Kyle and that's just not the sort of thing we want to see at our matches. We've worked hard to create a family atmosphere and it's important we protect that."

The Hogges, who have yet to pick up a point on the road this season, travel to the US later this week for three fixtures. As well as facing the Riverhounds, the Hogges play the Monarchs on Wednesday, July 23 and Cleveland City Stars on Saturday, July 26.
