Bascome walks out on Blazers

Andrew Bascome is believed to have walked out on Boulevard Blazers after a row over player commitment.

The head coach is understood to have issued an ultimatum to the Boulevard squad after falling attendances at training, which saw some sessions abandoned altogether when only three players turned up.

The issue reportedly came to a head this past week when numbers were again down for the team's two training sessions ahead of their top-of-the-table clash with PHC. This followed their exit from the Friendship Trophy the weekend before at the hands of Southampton Rangers.

Although near the top of the table, Blazers have now lost their last three games to Devonshire Cougars, Rangers, and PHC yesterday, and those close to Bascome have suggested he was not prepared to put up with the lack of commitment any longer.

His departure will alert the likes of Devonshire Cougars who are without a coach, and tried to lure Bascome to the Rec over the summer.

However, Bascome is also part of the Robin Hood set-up, and may well decide to throw all his attentions into getting the league newcomers into the Premier Division at the first time of asking.

According to a source close to Bascome, a final chance was given to the Blazers squad in the form of a Saturday training session prior to yesterday's game, but with fewer than seven players turning up, the Boulevard coach is understood to have decided enough was enough, and quit altogether.

He was conspicuous by his abscence from the game against PHC at Southampton Oval yesterday, and was reportedly spotted standing in the Robin Hood dug-out, a team he has been coaching this season, for their First Division clash with St David's at Lords.

In his abscence Carlton Fleming took charge of team affairs and refused to comment when asked about the situation.

Efforts by The Royal Gazette to reach Bascome yesterday were unsuccessful.
