Battle for Open League final

Open League cricket resumes this weekend with Young Men's Social Club, Devonshire, St.David's and St.George's all vying for a place in next Saturday's final at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

Tomorrow sees Group A winners St.David's taking on Group C winners Social Club at Lords while Group B winners St.George's will do battle with Group D winners Devonshire at nearby Wellington Oval.

Social Club, St.George's and Devonshire all remained unbeaten en route to the final four of the revised competition while St.David's overcame a thrilling low-scoring loss to six-times Belco Cup champions, Southampton Rangers, to pip a bolstered PHC side for the fourth and final semi-final spot.

Western Stars will host Central Counties rivals Police at St. John's Field today in a Group C make-up match originally scheduled for May 3 while Somerset take on Bermuda's Under-19 national squad in a Cup Match trial.

n Former national team player Lionel Cann says he takes exception to remarks made by Royal Gazette columnist Clay Smith who offered his opinion in yesterday's column.

"I was taken aback by the comments in the Clay Smith article about me scrapping Open cricket," said Cann, who writes his own column in the Bermuda Sun.

"He writes 'Lionel Cann says scrap Open cricket' and in the next line he writes many say Open cricket is an avenue to develop youngsters. He must not have read (my) article because I pointed out what I think is the way forward."
