Devonshire Cougars skipper Ijahmon Mallory hailed his side's steel after their draw with Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval.

Mallory's men got an equaliser through Kwame Steede towards the end of the first half after Keimo Smith had given the hosts the lead before anyone could get in their seats.

Both teams also ended the match a man down after Jesse Seymour and Kamen Tucker got into an altercation in the dying stages.

"It was a good game, hard fought match as everyone saw and we are getting stronger as we play more, so its encouraging," said Mallory.

"As long as we continue doing what we are doing we should be alright come the end of the season.

"The opening goal was a mental lapse on our behalf, being only on the pitch for a few minutes we weren't focused early on.

"They caught us off guard and that's to their credit, but we settled in and at the end we got something out of the match."

It took all of two minutes to get the scoring underway after Cougars' defenders were caught napping, allowing a sharp drive from Temeiko Flood to be deflected into the path of Smith to slide home from point blank range.

Shortly after conceding, it was the champions who had an immediate response through Lamuel Weeks from a corner but his header sailed wide of the mark.

Moses Steede was next to try his chance at breaking down the Rangers defence after linking with Weeks at the top of the box, only to use one too many touches to allow goalkeeper Jason Smith to collect the loose ball.

It took big cousin Kwame Steede to show the side how it's done in the 38th, rifling his shot from eight yards onto the underside of the crossbar, with the ball bouncing just over the line.

With Cougars bossing the match for much of the second half having far more possession and chances then Rangers, it was senseless that they where sent down to ten men.

Tucker made a reckless challenge on Seymour, and the pair proceeded to get into a shoving match resulting in both being sent to the showers.

Bermuda international Steede had a chance to settle matters after he was sent clear from a long clearance by 'keeper Ricardo Brangman but he put his effort wide, leaving the points to be shared between both sides.

"Our next match is a home game so we will be looking to get three points from that," he said.

"But you can't take anything for granted, you have to get what you can on the road and when at home make the most of your chances. Our focus is good right now but we need to keep the intensity up and have 11 men of the pitch which is down to us."
