Bay banking on reserves for Twenty20
Bailey's Bay skipper Terryn Fray believes their loss to Bermuda Under-19s in the Lindo's Twenty20 was merely a blip on the radar as the club look to give fringe players a chance to show their worth in the season ending competition.
The Under-19s won the game in convincing fashion, a seven-wicket victory at Sea Breeze Oval, although Bay fielded a weakened side with many of the players who played Eastern Counties the previous day not suiting up.
The defeat in their opening game is not being treated as a major setback for the club, with Fray admitting those who have worked throughout the season are being given a chance to play and make inroads into the first team.
"We aren't making any excuses for any losses but for this competition we are trying to give our reserves and those who have come training during the season a chance to show their qualities," said Fray.
"For the players like myself, Irving (Romaine), Jim (West), Dennico (Hollis) and others who have a solid spot in the team we aren't really too worried about the results at the moment.
"We are allowing those who have worked hard this season a chance to go out and get involved and something to look forward to.
"It's upsetting that we lost but as long as everyone is happy and playing, that is most important, we are fine with it."
Fray did acknowledge the side's main problem this year has been their batting and inability to score enough runs to win games.
Of their batsmen to have walked out to the wicket, only three offered any real defiance with Cal Dill Jr, batting at number eight, top scoring on 26 while number three bat Kyle Hodsoll followed on 25 and number six Jemeiko Marshall 13.
Latif Trott was the top bowler for the Under-19s with three wickets for 11 runs off four overs while Kamal Easton claimed three for 21 off four overs with a maiden.
The youngsters reached victory in 16.4 overs.
Knowing the tournament is a round-robin format, Fray still believes that his side can make the next phase of the competition, and a win on Saturday against Willow Cuts can get them on their way.
"Making a run is always important and for us we need to score runs," he said.
"We haven't had a lot of runs scored which has been our main problem, so for those in the team who can get amongst the runs, and even though we may not be in the top two, as long as we make a good impression then it is fine.
"This will go a long way towards next year and sorting out who has the ability to play at this level and see how they cope with these circumstances.
"A win against Willow Cuts will go a long way, even if we play Warwick on Sunday we need to get a win under our belt and take it from there."
