Bell lays down 35-goal challenge

Golden Boot: Coolridge (Bumla) Bell with the trophy and cash that he has put up as a prize for the striker that scores 35 goals in a season

Coolridge Bell has always wanted to give something positive back to local football and so this year the ex-Somerset Trojans and Bermuda striker has set aside $1,000 dollars in prize money for the Premier Division striker who can score 35 goals this upcoming season.

"I am president of a club that is called the 'Doers Club' in which you have to be doing something positive in the community to be a member - and we are always doing something positive," Bell explained.

"I decided that this year one of the things I was going to do was put up cash for the highest goal scorer who will also receive a trophy."

Bell himself achieved the milestone during the 1978-79 season playing for Trojans during his heyday when he used to wreak havoc on defences.

PHC and Bermuda Hogges coach Kyle Lightbourne is the last known Premier Division sharp shooter to bang home 35 goals in a single season, achieving the feat in 1991-92 just prior to signing for Walsall in England.

In recent times no Premier Division striker has managed to come anywhere near close to scoring 35 goals in a season. But with a new added incentive Bell believes the milestone is attainable.

"I have scored 35 goals before and so if it has already been achieved then there's no reason why it cannot be achieved again," he noted.

"I think it's a really good incentive and a good target for our strikers to go after to try and make the game exciting."

Bell stressed that all goals scored in league and cup competitions will count and says it feels "great" to be able to give something back to a sport he so passionately loves.

"It feels great to give something back to football because football has always been good to me.

"I've made many friends through football and it's always good to give something back to your community," he added.

In the event nobody is able to score 35 goals in the next three seasons, Bell said another $1,000 dollars will be added to the prize money as well a travel voucher to attend a football training camp in England.

He also hinted that a similar incentive could be extended to the local women's league.
