Bell offers cash incentive for Island's top strikers

Come and get it: Coolridge Bell holds the individual trophies that will be up for grabs this season.

Former Somerset Trojans and national team player Coolridge Bell will once again put up $1,000 in prize money for the Premier Division striker who can score 35 goals this season along with other prizes for each league in the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) structure.

Last year, it was Raymond Beach who came closest, albeit some distance away from the target with 25 goals.

Bell, president of the Doers Club which looks to give back to the community, is also aiming to reward the top scorer in each league along with the best Premier Division goalkeeper.

"Last season we put up a trophy and money but no one was able to make the mark we had set," said Bell. "The Doers Club have decided that from feedback from players and fans alike that we will hold a prize presentation for the top scorers from each league and best goalkeeper in the Premier Division.

"The club is a group of individuals who believe strongly in the closeness of family while always looking for ways to give back to the community.

"Our motto is do, do more and less talking.

"We will give these prizes out as well as gift certificates at the end of the season.

"We are doing this because we want to give back to the community."

PHC and Bermuda Hogges coach Kyle Lightbourne is the last known Premier Division hit-man to bang home 35 goals in a single season, achieving the feat in 1991-92.

Bell himself achieved the milestone during the 1978-79 season playing for Trojans.

However, no one has come close in recent years and with the incentive back this year, strikers will now have a big incentive to hit the back of the net regularly.

Bell also stressed that all goals scored in league and cup competitions would count.

New to the table this year will be the introduction of a Hall of Fame for those who have made valuable contributions to the community throughout the years.

"The highest goal-scoring prizes will include Premier, First, Masters, Women's and PDL leagues while the best goalkeeper will solely be for the Premier," explained Bell..

"In regards to the best 'keeper, we will ask the coaches to select two 'keepers and a brief summary of why they think he is the best and so forth.

"This year we will also introduce a Hall of Fame for those individuals who have made valuable contributions to sports such karate, football, golf, gombeys and majorettes."
