Bermuda can reach World Cup, says Logie
National cricket coach Gus Logie remains upbeat about Bermuda's chances of qualifying for the 2011 World Cup to be held in the sub-continent next spring.
With the proper mental approach, ideal preparations and team chemistry, the former West Indies Test player believes Bermuda stand a very good chance of repeating the success they enjoyed three-years ago in the UK where they qualified for a maiden World Cup under his watch.
Unofficially, Bermuda have been grouped alongside perennial powerhouse Kenya, the Netherlands, Denmark, United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as the eventual winner of January's World Cricket League Division Three Tournament in Argentina.
"We feel comfortable being in the group that we are in and there's no two ways about it that the Kenyans will be favoured," said Logie.
"We haven't really been able to get the better of Kenya in the past, but have come close. We have also had opportunities to play UAE in the past and had success against them in the last qualifiers (2005). And we have also had success against Holland and so it's a group that we feel comfortable in.
"We haven't discussed the World Cup qualifying groupings as a team. But I am certain that our players will feel comfortable as well in the knowledge that we have already beaten some of those teams in our group.
"And I think that if we can play to our full potential we can beat them again."
Trinidadian Logie is currently on a tour of Argentina where he has been presented with an ideal opportunity to further assess some of the players he has at his disposal in a developmental squad that recorded successive wins against the Argentines over the weekend.
The tourists beat their hosts by 136 runs at the St.Alban's Club on Saturday and followed up the next day with a two-wicket win at the Belgrano Athletic Club.
Off-spinner Tamauri Tucker has been in sparkling form with the ball, snatching seven-wickets on tour so far, while Oronde Bascome has been equally consistent with the bat.
Opening bat Chris Douglas (79), senior national team debutant Fiqre Crockwell (51) and Bascome (56 not out) all stroked half-centuries over the weekend.
Bermuda's tour, however, has not gone without its share of setbacks as promising all-rounder, Joshua Gilbert, has been sidelined through injury.
The Somerset cricketer was struck in the toe by a fuller-length delivery during a net session last Friday at the Belgrano Athletic Club.
But having rested for the past three-days, 15-year old Berkeley Institute student Gilbert could very well make his senior national debut today when Bermuda play their hosts in another 50 over contest at the St.George's College.
In terms of World Cup qualifying preparations so far, Logie is generally satisfied with the subtle progress being made and is keen to add more bite to his team's pace-starved bowling attack in the lead up to next April's crucial assignment in South Africa where Bermuda will rest their ODI status on the line.
"I still think we lack that fire power at the top with the new ball and so we are looking at bringing in one or two quick bowlers into the team to add a bit more balance to our attack," he said.
During last month's Americas Championship in Florida there were several individual performances, such as the consistency of pinch-hitter Lionel Cann, which drew praise from Logie who has encouraged his players to aim high.
Bermuda eventually finished runners up to champions USA.
"We are always looking for consistency and I think we saw a bit of consistency from some of our players at the previous tournament in Florida," Logie said.
Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday announced revisions to Bermuda's current tour of Argentina, which will see the tourists play an extra 50 overs match. The touring side were originally scheduled to play two 20/20 matches against their hosts December 17 at the Belgrano Athletic Club.
However, the two 20/20 matches have now been spread over two days (December 17 and 18) at the same venue.
Bermuda will also play their hosts in a 50 overs match at the Belgrano Athletic Club December 21 with December 19 now set aside as a rest day.
