Bermuda crushed in Davis Cup opener
Bermuda made the worst possible start to their Davis Cup campaign in Honduras with a 3-0 hammering at the hands of Costa Rica.
In the first tie of the Americas Zone Group IV round-robin competition that includes the hosts, the US Virgin Islands, Haiti and Costa Rica, the Island's players failed to win a set, and managed to win just 11 games between them in three matches.
Jensen Bascome, who went into the tournament on the back of good recent performances in the Island Construction Open and Argus Open, was beaten 6-1, 6-4 by Ignasi Roca. Gavin Manders, meanwhile, who beat Bascome in the final of the Argus Open, did little better, losing to Federico Chavarria 6-2, 6-0.
Chavarria and Fernando Martinez-Manrique then wasted little time in dispatching Jordan Talbot and David Thomas 6-3, 6-1 in the doubles to complete the whitewash.
The defeat makes Bermuda's chances of winning the tournament that much harder, something they must do if they are to gain promotion to Group III of the Americas Zone.
