Bermuda duo qualify for 2011 Boston Marathon
Two of the nine Bermuda-based runners who completed the prestigious Boston Marathon on Monday achieved the automatic qualifying time to gain a spot in next year's event.
Tatsuhiko Hoshina and Claire De Ste Croix easily met the challenging time standards needed to win a coveted place in the next running of the world's most famous and longest established marathon race.
Hoshina, who is the CEO of Tokio Millennium Re, settled into a competitive pace that saw him pass the halfway point in 1.35.01.
He ran slower in the final 13 miles, which featured a number of uphills including Heartbreak Hill near the 20-mile point, but crossed the line in three hours 19 minutes and five seconds.
Having reached the start line for Monday's event by setting a qualifying time in another race, Hoshina secured a qualifying time for the 2011 race in his age group (45-49) by just over 10 minutes.
In the women's division Devonshire's De Ste Croix, 45, ran a perfectly even-paced race, going through halfway in 1.50.35 en route to a 3.41.35 finish that was well inside the four hours she needed to achieve qualifying for 2011.
She was 234th in her age division. Fastest of the Island contingent was Warwick's Jason Trueman, 36, who ran 3.17.15.
Others who completed the course were Stuart MacKellar (3.43.14), Trevor Brookes (3.55.30), Stephen Dunkley (3.59.56), Christopher Smith (4.02.14), Sharon Craig (4.10.04) and Mairi Redmond (4.10.26).
The 114th Boston Marathon attracted 26,000 runners.
It was won by Robert Kiprona Cheruiyot, of Kenya, in a new record time of 2.05.52, while the women's race winner was Teyba Erkesso, of Ethiopia, in 2.26.11.
