Bermuda selectors' frantic weekend

Answering the call: St George's Cup Match pair Chris Foggo (left) and Landro Minors (right) have been called –into the Bermuda squad

An already under-strength Bermuda have been forced to call-up the uncapped David Lovell for today's Intercontinental Shield clash with Uganda at the National Sports Centre.

The Social Club medium pacer has been brought into a side already deprived of five front line bowlers, the last of whom, Kevon Fubler, withdrew on Saturday with a back injury.

Chris Foggo, Landro Minors and Dennico Hollis have also been added to a squad that has been decimated by injury, family commitments and retirements.

Already without Lionel Cann, Janeiro Tucker, Dwayne Leverock, Stefan Kelly, Glenn Blakeney, Kyle Hodsoll, OJ Pitcher, and Delyone Borden, Bermuda were then rocked by the loss of Justin Pitcher and Chris Douglas on Friday.

Pitcher withdrew, prefering to concentrate on playing for his club side, St David's, while Douglas was removed having failed to attend training for three days in succession. It got worse a day later when Fubler, the youngest member of the original 13-man squad, pulled out after he reportedly hurt his back in training on Friday.

David Hemp will now go into his first game as captain with a bowling attack led by Malachi Jones and 19-year-old Jordan DeSilva, who has never played a four-day game before.

The last 48 hours have seen the selectors spend the weekend scrabbling around trying to find replacements who were willing to play for the national team, and Minors only agreed to join the squad after a personal last-minute call from vice-captain Stephen Outerbridge.

With two one-day internationals to come this weekend, and a Twenty20 match to follow next Monday, the Bermuda Cricket Board were desperate to find some cover for a team already down to the bare bones.

Lovell, Foggo, and Minors were all added to the squad once they had passed mandatory drugs tests, and Lovell is believed to have been put straight into today's team, while Bailey's Bay youngster Hollis has been handed the 12th man duties.

It is unclear whether Foggo and Minors will feature in the four-day game, or if they have just been added for the limited overs matches that follow. But if, or when, Foggo plays, it would be his first appearance for the national team since he was hauled before magistrates on a drugs charge last year and was told "you've ruined your career".

For Minors his elevation to the national squad is the pinnacle of a summer that started with an impressive century against Cleveland in the Eastern Counties, moved on to a place in the St George's Cup Match side, and may well finish with a first senior appearance for his country.

Fortunately for Bermuda Uganda have had some serious problems of their own getting a team together.

Already without Kenneth Kamyuka, Joel Olweny, Junior Kwebiha, Nehal Bibodi and Nandi Kishore, they then lost opening batsman Arthur Kyobe and opening bowler Daniel Ruyange who were refused UK visas moments before the team were due to leave last Thursday.

Ruyange has been replaced by under-19 star Denis Tabi who was already with the team, but it was too late to find a replacement for Kyobe.

Bermuda squad: D Hemp, T Fray, F Crockwell, S Outerbridge, Irving Romiane, J Edness, R Trott, T Tucker, M Jones, J DeSilva, D Lovell, C Foggo, L Minors.
