Bermuda slip-up following fine start
Bermuda 173
St. Vincent & –Grenadines 179-4
Bermuda national team were brought back down to earth with a six-wicket loss at the hands of St. Vincent's and Grenadines Under-23 squad yesterday at Arnos Vale.
Gus Logie's side had won four of their previous five matches they have played on their Caribbean tour and were looking to carry on their fine form against the hosts at a venue they famously folded for 45 in a massive 241-run loss to Test side England in a World Cup warm up match nearly two years ago.
Landing on the Island Monday, the players had little time in preparing for the match, with a slight training session in the afternoon before their sixth game in three weeks.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, openers Fiqre Crockwell (17) and Chris Douglas (38) made a bright start to the innings putting on 56 runs before Crockwell was on his way back to the pavilion.
Losing quick wickets in short spurts was to follow the side for the rest of their batting allotment, with the opening partnership being the biggest of the visitors innings.
Stephen Outerbridge strolled to the crease to join Douglas and the two put on a further 30 runs before Outerbridge (17) was out and the score 86 for two.
Before anyone could blink at the ground, Douglas joined Outerbridge and Crockwell in the hut and the side in a spot of bother at 87 for three.
Skipper Irving Romaine (3) and veteran left-handed batsman David Hemp (44) made a brief attempt to reconstruct the innings, before Romaine was sent packing at 99 for four.
Swash-buckling Lionel Cann was thought to be the man to bring the visitors back into the match, but a golden duck was to be his demise and the score slumping to 99 for five
Hemp and Janeiro Tucker (15) put on 23 for the sixth wicket, taking the score to 122 for five before Tucker fell.
Delyone Borden (8) and Hemp fell with the score on 160, while George O'Brien Jr. (9) and Kyle Hodsoll (2) being the last wickets to fall with Dwayne Leverock remained at the crease, unbeaten on one.
In response, St. Vincent were never troubled in reaching the required total with captain Lyndon James leading the run chase with 58 not out, while Hyron Shallow (48) and Kenroy Martin (20 n/o) added key contributions.
Hodsoll took two wickets for 19 runs from five overs, while Leverock produced his usual impeccable figures, claiming two wickets for seven runs off seven overs, including three maidens.
The squad will return to action today, with Thursday a rest day.
