Bermuda squad to play in Argentina

Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) have accepted an invitation to send a team to Argentina in December to play a series of Twenty20 and One Day Internationals (ODI) against their Americas rivals, The Royal Gazette can reveal.

The Board have yet to announce full details of the winter tour. However, national coach Gus Logie yesterday confirmed that the Board plan to send a developmental squad to the South American country to play in matches that will benefit the Island's 2011 World Cup qualifying preparations.

Although the identity of Bermuda's development squad has yet to be revealed, Logie has made it no secret he intends to use the tour as a means to blood some of the Island's best future prospects, who will be given a chance to stake a claim in the senior national squad.

"It is a development tour and so we will be looking to take a few Under 19 players who are going to be available because we are looking towards the future as well," he told The Royal Gazette. "The selectors are mindful that this is going to be a development trip and so we are going to mix a bit of youth with experience."

It is understood promising Somerset seamer Jordan DeSilva, St.David's all-rounder Justin Pitcher, Western Stars skipper Justin Robinson and veteran batsman Glenn Blakeney are among those being considered to represent Bermuda in Argentina later this year.

Earlier this week it was revealed that the Board intend to enrol six national team players in an intense six -week winter training camp at the Sports Gateway Academy in Brisbane, Australia later this month.

Those players who will eventually be chosen to attend the academy Down Under will also be considered for team selection for December's tour of Argentina, Logie said.

n Bermuda's seven-year hold of the New Jersey Cup ended last week when they were edged out by seven runs by their host in New Jersey in the 40 overs contest.

Earlier the host reached their formidable total for the loss of just five wickets with Stan Stanuisilauis striking an undefeated 119 and Allan Gang 42. Skipper Vance Gilbert led the Bermuda team in bowling with two wickets for 56 runs off eight overs.

Stanuisilauis grabbed man-of-the-match honours after following up his batting feats with a haul of three wickets for 28 runs off eight overs with a maiden.
