Bermuda's best test their skills in Aruba

Bermuda's top junior cyclists will test their mettle this weekend in the fifth edition of the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Aruba.

Last year saw Izabella Arnold claim third in the time trial, one spot ahead of compatriot Claire Hawley, while Ryan Gunn came fourth in both the time trial and road race.

This summer's squad has a new-look to it with Hayley Evans, 2008 bronze medallist in the time trial and current junior female national time trial champion, the sole competitor for the girls section, racing in the 15-16 age group.

The Saltus graduate will be a freshman at Northeastern University this coming spring.

Joining Evans on the trip are Dominique Mayho and Tre-shun Correia, 2010 junior male national road race and time trial champions respectively, who will compete in the Junior (17-18) division.

Marquise Cann and Mark Godfrey are the representatives for Bermuda in the juvenile (15-16) division.

There will also a team competition which will combine the best results in all categories and both disciplines.

The time trial for all categories is 18 kilometres, while the girls 15-18 is 50 kilometres for their road race.

The juvenile boys race will be 60 kilometres in the road race, while 80 kilometres is the distance for junior boys.

The time trial will take place on Saturday with the road race being held on Sunday.

Peter Dunne, president of the Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA), BBA treasurer and executive committee member Nigel Godfrey, Durward Cann, and coach Geri Mewett make up the team's staff, although Mewett will not be making the trip.

In last year's racing it was Puerto Rico's Gina Rivera who won the female road race, Rudy Ashton, of Trinidad, claimed victory in the junior category and Barbadian Russell Elcock was the first home in the juvenile race.

In the time trial, Rivera also took top spot in the female race, Elcock triumphed in the juvenile category and Puerto Rico's Roberto Torres won the junior competition.

Puerto Rico were the overall winners with Bermuda finishing fourth.

Team Bermuda: Junior (17-18) - Dominique Mayho, Tre-shun Correia; juvenile (15-16) - Marquise Cann, Mark Godfrey; girls (15-18) - Hayley Evans.
