BFA scrap plans for beach event

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) have scrapped their plans to hold their first ever Beach Football tournament, which was due to start today at Clearwater Beach.

A lack of response from local clubs forced the BFA to pull the plug on the event, but they still hope to host a tournament next summer.

"Timing is of the essence, and it clearly showed with so much interest leading up to the first ever beach football tournament, we did not factor in pre-season training and players on vacation with their families," the BFA said on their website.

"The Premier and First Division Clubs have already committed to pre-season training, including Commercial League teams as well.

"It became difficult for anyone to give 100 percent with their focus and concentration solely on preseason training with their respective club as they prepare for the start of the 2008/09 season."

n The BFA are looking for a few good men and women to become certified referees for the upcoming season.

Youngsters and beginners can attend sessions at the National Sports Centre (Cricket Pavilion) from tomorrow until August 12.

Courses for senior referees will be held from August 17 - 19, while an assessor's course will be held from August 31 until September 2. There will be a fitness test for referees on September 7.

Former Bermuda international Kentoine Jennings will be in attendance at some of the sessions as he looks to learn the art of refereeing.
