BFA send out message to football's 'gangsters'

Bermuda Football Association are considering slapping a ban on players who have links to gangs on the Island.

A request has been sent to all Premier and First Division clubs this week asking them to consider a new BFA initiative, in which the clubs take a closer look at members of their teams who they believe have gang ties.

And a meeting is expected to take place in the next couple of weeks during which the BFA will push for a full ban on those players who are found to have such affiliations.

There have also been discussions at the highest level concerning players in the National Academy set-up who are believed to be in a similar position.

While the BFA would only confirm that discussions with clubs were due to take place, they are also understood to be on the verge of telling the national team players involved that they are not welcome in the academy set-up, until they severe any ties they may have with undesirable elements in Bermuda.

"We want the clubs to start going down the road where they know exactly who is representing them," said a BFA source. "We know who plays for the National Academy, and if this initiative goes through then no-one will be immune, it will apply across the board.

"We have to do this, we have no choice."

The governing body's stance comes after a week of unprecedented gang violence left two people dead and several others injured, and forced the BFA to postpone two games involving Boulevard Blazers' PDL team because of security fears.

Blazers were due to play Dandy Town on Thursday night, and Devonshire Cougars tonight, but both matches were postponed because all the teams involved have certain undesirable elements that have latched on to the clubs.

It is not the first time this year that there have been concerns surrounding Boulevard. They missed out on the chance to make St George's Wellington Oval their permanent home following the violence that marred Cup Match.

And in October, members of the Blazers' PDL team were attacked following a game at Southampton Oval, an incident that eventually led to two Southampton Rangers players being banned.

At the beginning of the season Dandy Town allowed Boulevard to use St John's Field as their home ground, but an incident last month when a Somerset Eagles player was attacked following his team's game against Blazers, saw them lose the right to continue using the field.

The club have now had to switch their home games to BAA Field for the remainder of the season, although their FA Cup clash with Wolves tomorrow will stay at St John's.

And while the BFA did postpone the PDL games, a spokesman for the governing body said no thought had been given to re-arranging the cup matches.

n BAA striker Vance Hill is facing a long ban after his sending off against Robin Hood last weekend.

Hill was sent off for two bookable offences, and he then proceded to verbally abuse the referee, before kicking over a trash can in front of the match commisioner as he stormed off the pitch.

It is not the first time the fiery striker has been in trouble this season, and a BFA official said he thought Hill's chances of playing football again this season were 'slim'.
