BGA scrap Mixed tournament

Golf in Bermuda has suffered another setback after the Bermuda Amateur Mixed Championships was axed due to lack of interest.

The tournament, which had been due to take place next weekend, had only two teams registered and as such has been cancelled for this year.

It is the second tournament this month to be scrapped, after the Romay Trophy, which the Bermuda Golf Association had tried to ressurect, also failed to fire the imaginations of the Island's golfers.

"It (the Mixed Championship) hasn't been one of those events that has been huge," said Scott Roy, BGA's tournament director.

"In the past on average they have had 14 or 15 teams and I did get a couple of phone calls after we decided to cancel, saying 'oh, we were looking at playing'. But we (the BGA) can't budget or anything with only two groups registered the week before."

And with the Bermuda Four Ball Championships the next big event in the golfing calendar scheduled to take place at Port Royal between November 11 and 14, the BGA are hoping that their struggles to fill these two events are not a sign of a greater problem within golf on the Island.

"Everyone goes month by month in Bermuda, so hopefully this will open up people's eyes and they will see that they have to get in early if they want to play," said Roy.

"I don't think there is a complete lack of interest, I think that golf in Bermuda is starting to revive itself, and the feedback I'm getting is that people are starting to look at the BGA slightly differently. There is an effort being made to improve golf in Bermuda, I just think there are12 years of poor management to make up for.

"We've moved from the bottom of the pile, up two rungs on the ladder, and we still have quite a climb to go. Unfortunately Rome was destroyed in a day, not built in a day, and lots of people want it built in a day."

n The BGA's biggest-ever fund-raising event is scheduled for Saturday, September 25 with a 60th anniversary dinner at Port Royal.

The event will feature trickshot player Jeremy Dale, an Alvin Ferreira Memorial Night Competition and 100 years of Memorabilia Showcase.

Tickets for $200, now on sale, will include cocktail reception, dinner, complimentary wine, door prize, raffle and auction.
